Rancho Mirage, California is a city in Riverside County, California. The population was 71,814 at the 2010 census and it is the county seat of Riverside County. It is part of the San Bernardino metropolitan area. Rancho Mirage is about 20 miles west of downtown San Bernardino and 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles on Interstate 10. The first European to explore Rancho Mirage was Juan Bautista de Anza in 1769. He founded what is now known as Chapultepec Park on land he purchased from Puebloan Indians near present-day Palm Springs. Rancho Mirage was platted in 1872 by John Cashion and named for General Mariano Juarez, who had marched through Southern California with General Anthony Wayne during the Mexican War of 1846-1848. The city's first post office was established in 1877. In 1907, Mexican immigrant ranchers began exporting cattle to American consumers via railroads along what are now Ulysses S Grant Boulevard and Pershing Drive outside of town; this led to the establishment of a livestock market within town limits that continued until 1925 when all markets were consolidated into one facility in adjacent City Heights development. In 1911, movie producer William Hays invested $200,000 (equivalent to $ million today) into acquiring unclaimed land north of town that he intended to develop into a massive ranch used for agriculture or pleasure purposes only; this triggered an intense community effort to prevent his plans from coming true as more than 2,000 people applied for membership in a citizen’s committee formed to oppose his goals including Mayor Harry Wainwright and other civic leaders such as Michael Jaffe who also served on Hays’s board of directors. Ultimately, Hays sold all his holdings back to residents for just under $1 million (equivalent to about $ million today). In 1922 local resident Roy Rogers developed what became Monument Valley which bisected Rancho Mirage from east-west while improving access roadsage southern portions currently occupied by residences which bordered Ohlone Indian Reservation southward before turning southeast onto I-10 past State Fairgrounds across from Griffith Observatory before continuing northeast onto current Ulysses S Grant Boulevard exiting towards general aviation operations at nearby Palm Springs Airport northeast of town center where it intersects with I-10 near Victorville then turns southeast again entering County Line Road just east off US 285 concurrent with US 95E approaching Menifee Valley Regional Airport northwest of town center while still remaining within Town Limits
