Rancho Mirage is a small town in Riverside County, California. It is located on the edge of the San Bernardino Mountains, about 20 miles east of downtown Los Angeles and 10 miles west of Blythewood. The population was 11,521 at the 2010 census. The area that now includes Rancho Mirage was first inhabited by Mono people. They were forced to leave their homes during the Mexican-American War because they were not able to pay taxes. In 1851, José Maria Verdugo bought 1,500 acres (500 ha) of land from John Sutter for $10 per acre. In 1864, Verdugo sold his land to David Hahn and Augustus Doheny for $20 per acre. In 1868, Hahn and Doheny divided their land into two shares and sold one share each to George Atherton and Jesse Yoakum. The Rancho Mirage area became part of Riverside County when it was created from parts of Orange County in 1893. In 1907, Gilbert Crenshaw donated 575 acres (250 ha) of land in Rancho Mirage to the United States government as part of Project Choiceford in order to provide housing for American soldiers stationed in World War I by creating a military airfield near Gorman and another airfield north of Palm Springs called Empire Airport(later known as Edwards Air Force Base). After World War I ended, most Of these facilities were abandoned but some remained used until 1942 when they were closed due to aerial bombing raids by the United States Army Air Forces. The post-war years saw significant growth at rancho Mirage with developers coming up with new ideas for using the facilities including luxury hotels, golf courses, shopping malls, auto shows etc.. By 1957 there had been more than 4 development projects totaling over 30 million dollars have been completed or are under construction within just a few blocks radius of rancho Mirage!
