Rancho Mirage, California is a city in Riverside County, California. The population was 135,813 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The area that would become Rancho Mirage was first settled by members of the Mexican-American community who called themselves "Las Palomas" or "The Palm Trees". In 1851, they gift grazing land to John C. Fremont and 100 other settlers as part of a Rancho grant. The grant was formalized on January 6, 1852 when Governor Manuel Folsom signed legislation creating Riverside County from portions of San Bernardino County. In 1860, cattle ranchers founded what would become known as the Desert Sun Mine and Drome mine near present day Cathedral City; these were two of the largest silver mines in California. By 1861 it had been developed into one large open-air refinery with an associated smelter; this site is now occupied by Chippendale Middle School and several other businesses located on Manchester Avenue between First Street and Second Street (now First St.). In 1906, citrus growers purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) around present day Rancho Mirage for $1 million from Jens Jensen, founder of Hansen's grocery chain in nearby Torrance. This tract became known as "Millionaire Row." Citrus production increased rapidly after World War II due to troops stationed at Mather Air Force Base using their kitchens for storage during their stay; this resulted in an influx of Americans looking for housing outside Los Angeles proper which led to development along Millionaire Row including many new homes and office buildings such as Southern Pacific's El Monte train station north of Interstate 215 in 1957/58 which remains today one of downtown Los Angeles' busiest intersections).
