Rancho Mirage, California is a small town located in Riverside County, California. It was founded in 1907 by James Fenton and his wife, Sarah. The village became a ghost town after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake destroyed much of downtown Los Angeles. However, the Casa Grande Rancho community has continued to thrive as a farming and ranching community ever since. The name Rancho Mirage comes from two Spanish words: ranchero - "ranch" and mirage - "mirage." The original land that would become Rancho Mirage was acquired by James Fenton in 1907 from Juan Ortega. At the time, it was one of the largest ranchos in Southern California. In 1912, Fenton married Nellie Clements who had also been born in Riverside County. They first settled on some 400 acres of land east of downtown Los Angeles where they built their home called Casa Grande. After four years of construction, they occupied their home for only nine months before moving back to Riverside County because Nellie’s health had started to decline rapidly due to her poor air conditioning at the time. Nellie died in 1916 at the age of 44 while living near Orange County with her husband and two young children; she is buried there alongside him beside her mother-in-law Sarah Fenton (1884-1966). Their eldest daughter Gertrude married Harold Matson (1909-1986) in 1933 and they had six children:Irma Matson (b 1934), Dennis Matson (b 1945), Pamela Matson (b 1951), Johnathon Matson (b 1957), Margery “Maggie” Atherton(b 1962). From 1926 until his death, Eberhard Rasch served as pastor for First Baptist Church of Rancho Mirage which is now known as Trinity United Methodist Church; he remains an honored member today and currently resides adjacent to his childhood home on Palm Desert Boulevard that he purchased from Mrs. Rasch's widow after she passed away in 2006 . Rancho Mirage experienced significant growth following World War II when many families moved into the area following military service or resettlement projects sponsored by both President Franklin D Roosevelt and General Douglas MacArthur . In 1946 Mayor Harry Winters appointed Irv Kappenberg as Manager of Planning Services for Recreation & Parks within City Hall which led to increased development opportunities for residents including new housing developments such as White Sands Lakeview Estates on State Route 62 just north of town off I-5 exit 9A/PARKSIDE DRIVE ; Ascot Lakeside Resort on Ascot Drive east of HWY 241 south between SR 202 & US 101 near Border Field Airport ;the Villages were developed along 2nd Street SW between HWY 6 & I-5 Exit 133B/WILSON RD.; Paramour Hills subdivision was developed immediately west side SW OF HWY 6 across from Westchester Elementary School off 2nd Street SW cornerPinacle Dr.; numerous other subdivisions have been developed since then all without my knowledge or permission
