Rancho Mirage is a city in Riverside County, California, United States. The population was 17,391 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The site of Rancho Mirage was reserved in 1913 by Hacienda de la Palmera, an agricultural enterprise controlled by the Olmsted-Vail family. Rancho Mirage is a small city in Riverside County, California. It is located on the border of Los Angeles and Orange County. The City of Irvine also borders Rancho Mirage to the south. According to the 2010 census, Rancho Mirage has a population of 34,846. The city was founded in 1907 by entrepreneur George Wickersham as an agricultural community on land that he had purchased from the Peninsular Indian Reservation. Wickersham named his community after himself, Rancho Mirage being Spanish for " ranch." The first post office was established in 1909 and operated under the name Miramar. By 1912, however, it had become apparent that there was not enough acreage in Rancho Mirage to support a large town and Wickersham sold his holdings to Leland Stanford Jr., founder of Stanford University. In 1916, Jerald Crayton became head of Southern California Gas Company and began buying parcels of land adjacent to what is now downtown Rancho Mirage for resale as farmland. By 1922, all but two acres were acquired by Crayton and placed into a new township called Irvine which became part of Riverside County when it was created from parts of Orange and San Bernardino counties on April 1, 1926. In 1932 Atherton Corporation (later Atherton National Bank) built its first building on Paradise Road east of Interstate 10 outside present-day downtown Rancho Mirage – this building still stands today as Atherton Plaza – making it one of only a few commercial buildings remaining from early 20th century Irvine.
