The Rancho Palos Verdes Air Force Base was one of the first air bases in the United States. The base was established on December 8, 1941, by the United States Army Air Forces in response to Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. The base remained active until 1954 when it was closed due to budget cuts. Rancho Palos Verdes, California is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in San Bernardino County, California. It is located on the eastern edge of palm trees, desert brush, and mountains. The population was 23,513 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to explore Rancho Palos Verdes were Spanish traders from Baja California who landed there in 1602 looking for land to sell back to the Mexican government. The first post office was established at Rancho Palos Verde in 1872, but it closed within a year due to lack of mail service between Los Angeles and San Bernardino County. In 1906–07 Donald Waddell developed the lands now within Rancho Palos Verdes into what became today's deer ranching industry with the construction of Doheny Dam on Menifee River which created Lake Menifee. Waddell also founded Winters Garden Nursery which still operates today as one of Southern California's largest nurseries
