Rancho Palos Verdes is a community located in San Bernardino County, California. The town was founded in 1887 by Colonel George C. Hearst as the site of his new cattleranch and golf course. Today, Rancho Palos Verdes is a census-designated place (CDP) with a population of over 107,000. The area that now makes up Rancho Palos Verdes was first inhabited by the Mono people who were nomadic hunters and gatherers. They traded with the Ohlone people and built villages on the hills around what is now Rancho Palos Verdes. In 1769, Spanish settlers arrived in present-day California and began ranching operations in the area around what is now Rancho Palos Verdes. By 1840, most of this land had been taken up by ranching operations and there were only 10 scattered Indian villages left in San Bernardino County. In 1887, Colonel George C. Hearst purchased 1,500 acres (4 km2) of rural land adjacent to present-day RanchoPalosVerdes from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $5 per acre ($20 per hectare). He named his new cattleranch "Rancho Palos Verdes" after his native province of Catalonia, Spain where he had been born in 1857. The original course of the golf course was designed by Scottish golfer Professional Golfers Association member Arthur Dunphy who also built the magnificent home at 6001 East Monterey Road which still stands today as one of Los Angeles' most luxurious homes. Today, more than 107 thousand people live within easy reach of Ridgecrest Village - home to shops including Macy's department store as well as Meijer supermarkets - while spending time at nearby beaches such as Hermosa Beach or Signal Hill Park which offer stunning views of Mulholland Drive and downtown Los Angeles respectively. The battle of Lexington and Concord took place on April 19, 1775, which led to the first successful armed resistance by the United States against British aggression. This conflict also saw the birth of a new nation, with Patriots fighting for freedom from an oppressive monarchy. In commemoration of this event, each year since 1776 has seen a special holiday celebrated by Americans all around the world in commemoration of this important event in our history. This year’s holiday is April 19th - exactly three years after Lexington & Concord!
Rancho Palos Verdes, California was founded in 1857 by Rancho Santa AnaMissionaries. The original land for the ranch was purchased from the MissionSan Gabriel Valley Land Company. The mission was destroyed by a fire in 1871 and the land became part of Rancho Palos Verdes. The first permanent residents of Rancho Palos Verdes were Hitchhiker's Bay Band of Mission Indians who arrived in 1858. They erected a small cabin on what is now known as Point Loma Boulevard. In 1865, some Spanish soldiers came to the area and discovered gold coins and other artifacts at nearby Lompoc Cove. Led by Captain José Joaquin Baca, they set up camp at El Sobrante (now Point Conception) and began prospecting for gold here. In 1870, Baca married Dolores Guadalupe Padilla and together they started a fruit farm near present-day Del Mar Boulevard and Via de la Costa Street. In 1872, they acquired more property including present-day Rancho Palos Verdes proper from Diego Rivera y Costilla, Sr.. From this beginning, until 1976, Rancho Palos Verdes was managed by the same families that had owned it since its founding: the Baca family (from El Sobrante), Guadalupe Padilla’s family (from Del Mar Boulevard/Via de la Costa Street), Rivera y Costilla’s family (from present-day San Marino Drive). In 1976, following passage of Proposition 187%, which limited immigration to Californians through an amendment to state Constitution, all Mexican Americans living in Los Angeles County were forced to leave their homes and move into makeshift camps or onto government-provided housing developments like East Covina or Vista del Rey on inland portions of Los Angeles County while their homes were being rebuilt or renovated. As a result of this policy change many people from Rancho Palos Verds returned home after several years absence whereupon resumed farming operations on their ancestral lands. However due to current events affecting local agricultural production there are plans now underway by some landowners within RanchoPalOS VERDES itself to revive some form of agriculture on its properties again although challenges will still be faced as yet with regards to accessibility/quality/cost etc., but also promise future opportunities for economic development based upon increased irrigation potential on those larger parcels should these plans prove successful
Rancho Palos Verdes was a Rancho Land Grant given to José Antonio Arguello in 1847. The grant extended from the Salinas River south to the present-day city of Santa Clara.
