Rancho Palos Verdes was founded in 1821 by Juan Bautista Alvarado and his wife, Maria Paloma. It became a Rancho in 1847 and was sold to Manuel Nieto in 1861. In 1886, it was purchased by George Hearst. The rancho passed from Hearst to his son Douglas MacArthur in 1947. It is now part of the city of Malibu.
