Rancho Palos Verdes was first developed as part of Rancho Los Alamitos Spanish land grant in 1871 by Manuel Nieto and his brother Don José Gomez de la Cruz. In 1892, it became part of the City of San Luis Obispo. On July 1, 1922, Rancho Palos Verdes was merged into the city limits of San Luis Obispo. The name "Rancho PalosVerdes" comes from an early MexicanMission named Guadalupe which operated near present day Rancho Santa Margarita until 1824 when it reverted back to Mexico and the mission reverted back to its original name "Guadalupe y Costilla". The grantee for Rancho Los Alamitos include Juan Bautista de Anza who founded Mission San Gabriel Arcángel on January 3rd 1776 (near modern-day downtown) and Mariano Rivera who played professional baseball at Mission Park from 1947 to 1951; both were buried there in nearby Forest Lawn Cemetery. In 1871 Manuel Nieto purchased 5,000 acres (20 km²) east of present day downtown San Luis Obispo from Andrés Manuel López Osorno for $360 per acre ($27/ha). The land had been granted by Garcia Ysidro De Anza on October 20th, 1860 after two years' wanderings through central Alta California looking for a new home for his family following their expulsion from Monterey Bay Colony due to religious differences with Governor Píjaro's Spanish congregation over baptism rituals administered by Jesuits under auspices of Bishop Diego Ortiz (July 25th - November 10th 1849). At that time ranching activity consisting primarily of cattle driving and grazing were among some Ofiecía residents already established in this area including Benicia Creek Valley Station on December 6th 1840 by José Saravia while exploring what would become known as El Dorado County along with those at Rancho Los Alamitoes east side approximately one mile south at Rinconada Creek where he met 4 Californios under Captains Sanchez y Gasset en route up Joaquinhn Pass on horseback over winter months previous year Dec 1840/Jan1841 A Gold Rush era began with thousands upon thousands prospectors streaming into this vast country searching for nuggets worth millions or even tens or hundreds of dollars each as gold dust and other precious minerals reached fever pitch during Spring & Summer 1861 followed by massive Enterpriser Builders initial rush starting about 1850 mostly men 50+,60+ years old several families many Hundred Thousand Dollars Dollars Ute Indians working here also

Rancho Palos Verdes, California is a small, rural community located in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The community was founded on April 17, 1887 by Rancho owner James Irvine. The name "Rancho" comes from Spanish and means "farm". The first post office in Rancho Palos Verdes opened on October 15, 1888. The population of Rancho Palos Verdes was only fifty-six people when it became a town in 1912. By 1948 the population had grown to 1,500 residents. In 1965 the town limits were extended to include present day Encinitas and Cerritos. In 1978 Rancho Palos Verdes made national headlines when it voted to secede from Los Angeles County and become its own municipality with its own government and school district. This move outraged many people in Los Angeles who felt that their suburb should have been treated equally to the city proper. Rancho Palos Verdes remains an agricultural community with grapes being the most common crop. There are also cattle and horse herds as well as some vegetable gardens.
Rancho Palos Verdes was founded in 1836 by Rancho Pastoria de las Pulgas, a grant from Don Miguel Soto. The land was originally part of the Rancho San Felipe grant given to Juan Bautista de Anza by Mexican Governor Pío Pico. In 1871, the property became part of the Rancho Santa Margarita grant given to Emilio Castilla. The current ranch is founded in 1876 by Antonio Peña and it includes much of what is now Orange County and Los Angeles County.
