Rancho Palos Verdes is a small community located in the San Bernardino Mountains east of Los Angeles, California. It was founded in 1881 by Mormons who fled to the area from Missouri. The name comes from Rancho Palm Springs which was granted to them by Governor Pio Pico on October 15, 1868. Rancho Palos Verdes also contains evidence of habitation dating back over 10,000 years. The first Europeans to visit this area were the Spanish in 1765 and they named it Las Venturas because of all the vents on Mount Palos Verdes. In 1878, Major George C. Smith surveyor for Los Angeles County surveyed this area and found that there were no suitable land grants for settlers in what is now Rancho Palos Verdes County. So he recommended that the government give land to Mormon settlers who would help manage and improve the land. On November 3rd, 1879, Governor Pio Pico approved these plans and gave General James Hahn permission to organize a settler group known as "The Mission Party." This party consisted of six men: John Sutter (founder of Sacramento), Wm., Doniphan (founder of Phoenix), Lorenzo Snow ( founder of Salt Lake City), David Whitcomb (founder of Ventura County), and George Atherton (founder of Channel Islands). On December 4th, 1879, Hahn divided the country into four wards or districts: Alta California; Baja California; Santa Clara Valley; and Orange County/Los Angeles Counties/Alameda County respectively. This division was based on religious affiliation - Catholics lived in Alta California while Protestants lived in Baja California, Santa Clara Valley and Orange County/Los Angeles Counties/Alameda County respectively.Within each ward there were certain areas where ranching activity took place such as at Knott's Berry Farm near Chatsworth Village west of Pasadena or at Fort Tejon north-west of Modena which served as military posts during World War II. It should be noted that these were not scattered locations but rather specific places where livestock operations took place with trees being chopped down for fuel or hayricks used for storage purposes only later being donated to the community park which still stands today
The Rancho Palos Verdes Estates was a land grant given in 1848 to José Antonio Palos Verdes. It extended from San Pedro Bay in the south to Monterey Bay in the north, and from east to west. The estate included more than 4,000 acres of land.
