In 1857, after years of growth and development, the first school was built in Rancho Palos Verdes. In 1865, Josefina Teja became the owner of Rancho Palos Verdes when her husband died. She continued to operate it as a personal estate until her death in 1916. After her death, it passed through several hands before becoming part of the Empire Coffee Corporation in 1922. It was sold to Jaffe & Sons Incorporated in 1968 and then to its current owners, PG&E Company and Constellation Brands Inc., in 2002.

The city began as an agricultural community on 1,500 acres (600 hectares) of land near what is now downtown LA. In 1892, William Randolph Hearst purchased the land from theMexican government for $15 million. He turned it into a luxury resort town with lakeside villas and private beaches for his wealthy friends and family. The town quickly became popular among Hollywood stars and their families, who built grandiose homes that remain standing today. In 1961, Hearst sold Rancho Palos Verdes to developer Arthur Jacobs for $200 million. Jacobs made huge investments in new roads and schools, creating one of America's most prestigious suburbs. The suburb continued to grow until its incorporation as a city in 1974. Today Rancho Palos Verdes remains a bedroom community for the rich while also serving as an important cultural center for Los Angeles County.

Rancho Palos Verdes is a small town in San Bernardino County, California, on the edge of the Santa Monica Mountains. The name derives from Rancho Palos Verdes Estates, a grant to Carlos Borromeo in 1853. The original settlers were English and Irish immigrants who started out as farmers and ranchers. They developed a dairy industry and raised horses and cattle. By the late 19th century, many of them had moved away to Southern California because of the cheap land and good climate there. In 1912, they founded their own city, which became one of Southern California's most thriving cities during the 20th century. The original settlement was around 10 acres (4 hectares). It grew quickly due to its location and access to resources such as water and grazing land. In 1924, it was expanded by annexing part of neighboring Hidden Valley Rancho Park. Today, Rancho Palos Verdes has a population of over 100 thousand people who live in both its townships (the eastern half) and its villages (the western half). It is home to two universities: USMCLA (UCLA), which is located in Los Angeles proper; and Claremont Graduate University (Claremont Colleges), which is located east of Westwood near Oxnard Naval Air Station. Rancho Palos Verdes began as an agricultural community with livestock farming 30 years ago today! Over time our economy has diversified into other sectors such as manufacturing/technology/services etc., but our roots remain deeply embedded within agriculture!
