Rancho Palos Verdes was founded in 1836 by Jose Antonio Palos and his wife, María de la Concepción. The original land consisted of about 7,000 acres (2,100 ha). In 1853 the Palos family sold the Rancho to John C. Frémont for $10,000. In 1863, Frémont built a mansion on the rancho for himself and his family. The property remained in Frémont's ownership until 1916 when it was acquired by millionaire Leslie S. Hogg. Hogg made extensive alterations to the house and renamed it "Hogg-Lang Mansion" in honor of his sponsor. The house passed through several hands before being purchased by General Omar Bradley in 1969 and donated to UCLA. It has been used as a dormitory and headquarters for the UCLA police department since 1974.
