Unit No 1 Museum is open daily 9am-5pm from April through October (closed Christmas Day). Admission is free! In 1941, after World War II ended and Japanese forces landed on Southern California beaches seeking refuge inside our country’s borders following their attack on Pearl Harbor, American servicemen began arriving in large numbers at Naval Station Ventura County! firmly establishing our presence hereabouts! On July 21st 1945 – less than two months after Japan’s surrender – Squadron 3USMClanded here aboard USS Constitution!! This Squadron WAS responsible for providing security for all US Forces stationed ashore Navy Station Ventura County during Operation “Enduring Freedom” which culminated in September 1945 when Japan capitulated!!! units totaling 20 Marines/equipment were landed here direct from Japan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The grant was made in order to create a military post where the Mexican army could be stationed during the time of war with Spain. The first commander of this post was Colonel José Gomez, who served from 1847-1848. At that time, Rancho Palos Verdes was only a small community located off of Highway 101 near present day Carpinteria. Rancho Palos Verdes, California is a census-designated place in Los Angeles County, California. As of the 2010 census, its population was 83,574. The community's name means "Palos Verdes" in Spanish. Rancho Palos Verdes was founded by Juan Bautista de Anza in 1795 as Rancho San Pedro y Santa Catalina. It became part of the City of Los Angeles on April 4, 1913. The community is located on a peninsula between the Santa Monica Mountains and Pacific Ocean. The first Europeans to reach Rancho Palos Verdes were José Altamira and his brother Miguel de Alvarado who sailed from Mexico City on October 13, 1769 with two ships called La Grita and El Rey Nuestro Dios for exploratory purposes only. They landed at Palos VerDES about 12 miles south of present day downtown Los Angeles on November 10th where they built a small fortification named Fort San Fernando which served as their headquarters and ranch house until 1802 when Pico Rivera took possession of the land east of Ventura Boulevard near Glassell Park Reserve Estates after achieving victory over Mexican forces at Battle Of Buena Vista (December 6th). On January 1st 1802 Pico Rivera assigned Francisco Crespí to manage Rancho San Pedro y Santa Catalina from this point forward following Mapuche independence from Spain beginning that year. In 1814 Coyote Hidalgo purchased alluvial lands adjacent to what is now Rancho Palos Verdes from Juan Bautista de Anza for $8 per acre following his expedition through central Californias area.) In 1865 Bigelow & Co., developers who bought most of eastern Anaheim Hills lost control of their business venture when they failed to come up with a way to make money off watermelons imported by Russian farmers so they sold most or all their holdings within five years including Rancho Palos Verdes which they had acquired along with other properties including Anaheim Hills in 1848 during an effort by several wealthy men led by Adolphus Bechtel to take over much of eastern Orange County) forming what would become known as Bechtel Industries (now Lockheed Martin) . At that time it consisted mostly of citrus groves but also included mills, oil Refineries and other businesses) .) In 1924 John Atherton donated 1/5interest in his Malibu estate through mail order because he felt that if there was ever any difficulty finding buyers for his property he wanted others to have an opportunity too ) .) Rancho Palos Verdes is a small community located in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The community is best known for its exclusive compound, Rancho Palos Verdes Estates, which was founded by entrepreneur Donald Bruce in 1923. The estate includes more than 100 acres of land and was once home to over 1,000 people. The rancho palos verdes area was first inhabited by the Tongva people. In 1853, Jose Maria del Valle claimed part of the Rancho Palos Verdes area for himself and his family. In 1881, John C. Frémont surveyed and named the property Rancho Palos Verdes after General Ricardo Rockwell's unit of troops who had fought in Mexico during the Mexican-American War. Donald Bruce established Rancho Palos Verdes Estates on his property in 1923 as an escape from vegetables that he grew on his farm near Lancaster, California. At one time, it was one of America's most luxurious estates with over 100 acres of land and 5 miles (8 kilometers) of beachfront coastline. Today only a few pieces remain of what once constituted one of America's largest private estates: The estate's main house still stands today but has been extensively renovated and offers tours year-round; its neighboring Pleasure Beach House also remains standing but is not open to visitors; while their other two properties - portions of which have now been turned into homes - are now used as nature reserves or golf courses. In recent years, some members of the community have voiced concerns about how much access they've been able to gain to some aspects of their former estates while others continue to live there largely unchanged since the 1920s without any formative input from those living there today or anyone who cared about their historic status quo. Some residents feel that they should be given more say in how their money goes and whether or not their assets can be used for public purposes rather than just being handed down through inheritance like many other Properties within this exclusive enclave outside Los Angeles County
