The Rancho Palos Verdes National Guard was organized on December 15, 1912. The mission of the Rancho Palos Verdes National Guard is to provide a military force for the safety and security of the community. The first unit to be fielded by the Rancho Palos Verdes NationalGuard was an artillery regiment. The regiment served for six years during World War I and two years during World War II before being disbanded in 1945. During World War II, the Rancho Palos Verdes NationalGuard served under three different commanders. The first commander was Major General James H. Webb who served from 1942-1945. He became Commanding General of the California Army National Guard in 1945 after his resignation from command of United States Army Forces Pacific Fleet in that year. The second commander was Lieutenant Colonel John Crouse who served from 1944-1945. He became Commanding General, 9th Infantry Division on January 1, 1946 and relinquished his command effective February 3rd due to health reasons. In 1951, Colonel Harry Wachtel assumed command over all national guard detachments within Ventura County when he appointed Assistant Deputy Director for Military Assistance Programs at Headquarters Department of Defense Security Agency where he remained until 1953 when he tookcommand of Depot Battalion (Army) 553d Parachute Regiment which he commanded until his retirement in 1957 also becoming Assistant Deputy Director for Military Assistance Programs at Headquarters Department of Defense Security Agency where he remained until 1959 also becoming Superintendent of Schools District One). In 1802 Mexican landowner José Gabriel Baca granted two tracts of land that included what is now Rancho Palos Verdes south of Sepulveda Boulevard and east of Western Avenue to Juan Pérez Cabrillo for $5 an acre ($2/km²). In 1805 Baca sold his interest in these lands to Spanish entrepreneur Alvarado Castro for $21 per acre ($10/km²). This sale set off a series of transactions that added more than 350 acres (160 hectares) to Rancho Palos Verdes over the next decade and a half. On November 3, 1837 Governor Manuel Micheltorena issued a proclamation designating part of Indian Wells Canyon between Canoga Park Boulevard and La Mujer Road as part oflos Arenales National Monument; this included much of what is now Rancho Palos Verdes north of Buena Vista Street. On January 1, 1840 Mexico ceded control over all Californios east of Buena Vista Street to Ulysses S. Grant pursuant to Treaty 7118 including Rancho PALOS VERDES . After Mexican independence from Spain on April 12, 1821 federal employees burned most everything within five miles (8 km) radius including all buildings on ranch property--an event chronicled by writer Zalman Neruda in his novel Don Quixote . No specific reason is given for this action but it probably represented some kind of resentment against Mexicans who had settled in large numbers here after Mexican independence. During World War II much work took place at Hill Air Force Base adjacent to RANCHO PALOS VERDES with thousands employed there during 1942-1945 season alone!
