Rancho Palos Verdes, California is a census-designated place (CDP) in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 56,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Westside neighborhood. The name "Rancho Palos Verdes" was given to the area by Mexican land grantee José Francisco Ruiz in 1847 and it coincides with the Rancho San Vicente de la Cañada mission founded in 1776 on an estate near present-day Fillmore Avenue and Western Boulevard. The original plan for Rancho Palos Verdes called for it to be three square miles (10 km²). In 1887, entrepreneurs James Wickersham and John Davenport bought 640 acres (2 km²) of what would become Rancho Palos Verdes from Ruiz. They named their property after two wealthy Californians: George Copley Russell (founder of Guggenheim Museum) and his wife Lucy Webb Copley House (later destroyed by fire). In 1909, they sold another 614 acres (2 km²) to developer Harry Chandler for $1 million. The first homes were built on these new lands between 1913 and 1916 by William Fenton Clark and his brother Edward Hutton Clark Sr.. The Clarks developed a irrigation system that made palos verdes one of the most successful farming areas in Southern California during this time period. The development also attracted leading artists such as Winslow Homer, Maynard Cowles Jr., Edward Hopper and Toni Morrison who lived adjacent to Clarens Drive Atwater Estate until their deaths in 1986 or 1987 respectively. During World War II many soldiers stationed at nearby Miramar Marine Corps Base used ranchland as their barracks while they underwent training at El Toro Marine Air Station; many houses still stand today evidence of this time period. However, around 1948 all military housing was discontinued in Los Angeles County due to budgetary constraints;palos verdes reverted back to its agricultural nature until 1964 when subdivision began being built there again as well as numerous other developments throughout southern LA county which has continued ever since due to its prime location within easy driving distance of most major metropolitan centers including Beverly Hills/Hollywood /Westwood etc... The initial donation of theland included parcels of present-day Los Angeles County and parts of Orange County. In 1851, following the Mexican-American War, General Winfield Scott Purchase the land from Reyes for $20,000. In 1880, after serving as President of California, Ulysses S. Grant purchased all but 1/8thof the remaining rancho from Reyes's heirs for $3 million dollars. The rancho ran until it was sold to William Randolph Hearst in 1913 for $27 million dollars. In 1922 it was donated to the City of Los Angeles by Mayor James Rolph for use as a public park and open space. Today Rancho Palos Verdes is an open-air museum with exhibits on American history and culture
In 1847, Rancho Palos Verdes was granted to Carlos Zacatecas by the Mexican government. The grant included 640 acres (251 hectares) of valley land east of San Diego and south of Interstate 8. In 1870, part of the rancho was sold to H.J. Beall who made it his home from 1871 until his death in 1906. After Beall's death, much of the rancho passed through the hands of his four children: Harry J., Edwin P., Clifford R., and Alice B.. The last owner, Alice B. Beall, sold the ranch in 1943 to Mr. and Mrs. Edward Goudreau for $4 million dollars ($100 million in current currency). Rancho Palos Verdes is a census-designated place located in Los Angeles County, California on the border with Orange County at milepost 16 on State Route 53. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 66,512 people living within its borders including 35% Hispanic or Latino residents as well as 13% international residents
