The rancho was granted in 1835 to Jose Maria Palos Verdes by Governor Manuel Michelin. The original grant included a thousand acres of land and five hundred head of cattle. In 1865, the Rancho was sold to A.J. Beall and W.H. Beall who subdivided it into parcels of seventy-five acres each and named their holdings after their father or grandfathers: José María, Amedeo, Felipe Neri, Antonio Palos Verdes, José de la Mata y Molina, Lorenzo de la Rúa y Pacheco. In 1930 therancho was purchased by Mr. Sampson as part of his purchase of the Rancho San Vicente del Rosario from Mr. López Mateos for $8 million dollars After World War II the rancho fell into disrepair and was abandoned by its previous owners until it was purchased by the city in 1961 for $2 million dollars Since then, much has been done with the property including residential developments such as Northwood Village and Vista Hermosa; agricultural use such as corn planting; and finally a campaign to revive it as an all-purpose recreational area called "RanchoPalosVerdes" which began in 1976
