In 1937 Deputy Sheriff Harry Sipple became the first policeman to be killed on duty when he was shot by an unknown assailant while responding to a call about a fight at Midway Park. Since then, every other policeman has died on duty except one (Deputy Sheriff Tom Dooley). In 1949, Sergeant Roy Hecht became rancho palos verdes’s second police officer after leaving Los Angeles County Police Department’s Homicide Section. Sgt Hecht had worked with local officers during his time with LAPD and felt that they were not equipped enough to handle Rancho Palos Verdes cases which led him to start his own department with 12 officers called “The Hermit Men” because their work only involved patrolling the streets and doing no crimefighting outside of arresting people for minor infractions such as littering or breaking campaign promises made by politicians during their campaigns for reelection . Since its inception, Rancho Palos Verdes’ police department has seen changes both good and bad including numerous retirements/injuries along with new hires coming into service such as Patrolman First Class Leroy Hanes who joined in 1969 followed by Sergeants Bobby Dyer (1970-1972), Donny Weitz (1973-1982) and Jerry Jablonski (1983-1989). On November 3rd, 1998 after more than 20 years of service policing Rancho Palos VerDES residents were finally given their own police substation complete with 8 patrol cars located at 2 different locations within city limits providing better coverage throughout all parts of town
