Today, there are over 20 small batch coffee shops in the city. The city of Rancho Palos Verdes was founded on February 14th, 1875 by James Phelan and his brother-in-law Capt. John Sloat. In 1876, Capt. John Sloat and his family donated 10 acres of land to the town for a public park and school. This area is now known as "The Park." In 1879, Jules Ferry bought 100 acres of land from Capt. John Sloat for $5,000. This area is now called "Ferry Field." In 1912, Donato Cellini opened Canasta Coffee House in downtown Rancho Palos Verdes with single origin beans from Africa and South America brought back into Europe on a three-month trip by Donato's fathercellist Giovanni Cellini himself! The shop soon became a popular tourist spot for locals and visitors alike looking for an intimate cup of Joe or a chat with the cellist during their morning commute to work or play! In 1937, Donato passed away at the age of 91 years old while still running Canasta Coffee House unchanged! Donato's grandson Angelo took over ownership of Canasta Coffee House after his grandfather's death in 1951 and continued to serve delicious lattes all day long until 1988 when he retired due to health issues! After 17 years serving as proprietor/manager at Canasta Coffee House (and later becoming its Vice President), Angelo sold it to Dick Savoy who reopened it as Rancheria de la Costa La Peña which continues today as one of Los Angeles' most popular small batch coffee shops! Rancho Palos Verdes, California is located in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County. It was named after Rancho Palos Verdes, a small ranch near Mission Viejo. The first Europeans to visit Rancho Palos Verdes were Spanish missionaries in 1821. The mission was destroyed by the Lompoc earthquake in 1853 and never rebuilt. Rancho Palos Verdes became a private land grant to Captain John Clutchenor in 1876. It was sold to U.S. cattleman George Hearst in 1903 and eventually became known as Rancho Palos Verdes Hills Country Club. In 1936, it was redesignated as Rancho Palos Verdes State Park, which remains its present name today. The most notable resident of Rancho Palos Verdes during its heyday was author F Scott Fitzgerald who lived there from 1922 until his death in 1940. Fitzgerald wrote many of his famous works here including "The Great Gatsby", "The Sun Also Rises" and "As You Like It". He left behind a number of important artifacts including the Presidential Blue Jay house which still stands on property now used by the county government as office space and also houses a museum dedicated to Fitzgerald's life and work. In addition to Fitzgerald, other well-known residents of this area during their time include actor/director Edward Gwynne (1915-1999), singers Frankie Valli and Joe Bonamassa (1911-1992), MLB pitcher Don Baylor (1948-1990) and TV personality Barbara Stanwyck (1920-2012).
Rancho Palos Verdes was founded in 1911 by John T. MacArthur, a cattle rancher and entrepreneur. The name comes from the Spanish word palos (a palm). The ranch is located on the eastern coast of San Diego County, about 20 miles north of downtown San Diego. In 1935, the United States government acquired the Rancho Palos Verdes for $10 million in what became known as the MacArthur-Litton Agreement. In 1944, during World War II, the Rancho Palos Verdes military airfield was used to house B-25 bombers of strategic bombardment squadron Thirty-Third Air Force. The ranch has been owned by various families since then, including those of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory founder George Westinghouse and his wife Eleanor Roosevelt. In 1978, Commodore John Halsey Perry honorary lifetime membership was conferred upon him at RanchoPalosVerdes golf club after he made an unsuccessful campaign to become California's first governor without having lived on the state's mainland since 1849.
