In the early 1900s, air force deployments were often small in size and limited to a few locations. Rancho Santa Margarita was one of these locations. The California Air National Guard's (CANA) first mission was to provide protection for the citizens of San Diego. In 1907, the state legislature passed a law authorizing the ANG to establish a military detachment at Rancho Santa Margarita. This detachment became known as the Flying Tigers and served as an aerial bombardment unit against enemy forces during World War II. The ANG also conducted various agricultural experiments at Rancho Santa Margarita between 1942 and 1945. These experiments included developing a new variety of wheat that would be more drought-resistant; researching methods of irrigation; and studying methods of controlling fire in forested areas. During World War II, the ranch played an important role in aircraft production by producing planes for both American and Japanese forces. After the war ended, it reverted back to its original use as an agricultural research center until it closed in 1970. Today, Rancho Santa Margarita is still home to CAANG's flying Tigers squadron who serve as part of Joint Task Force Ventura Operations Area (JTF-VOA). As part of JTF-VOA, they are responsible for conducting airstrikes against ISIS targets in Syria and Iraq while providing support to coalition partners on ground operation

Rancho Santa Margarita is a ranch located in the Antelope Valley of California. It was founded by Mexican immigrants in 1879. The ranch has been in the same family for over 100 years. The name "Santa Margarita" comes from a Spanish word meaning "the beautiful valley." Rancho Santa Margarita is one of the most important ranches in California and it has many famous tenants, including Hollywood Actor Douglas Fairbanks Sr., Governor Ronald Reagan, and author Irvine Welsh.
The area now known as Rancho Santa Margarita was part of the Rancho San Diego Mexican land grant given to Juan Jose Dominguez in 1821. The grant extended from today's Bolsa de Pajaro Valley all the way to the Pacific Ocean. In 1848, silver was discovered in what is now eastern Bolsa de Pajaro County and a group of investors led by Manuel Nieto purchased the property for $5,000. Over time, other investors bought out or merged with these initial owners. In 1867, President Ulysses S. Grant granted title to Rancho Santa Margarita to Francisco Sanchez y Ulloa. Sanchezy Ulloa served as recorder and justice of the peace on theranch until his death in 1915. In 1916, Alfred Murchison became owner and operated it until his death in 1957. After Murchison's death, it passed through several hands before being acquired by John Ackerly in 1963. Ackerly turned it into a cattle ranch and added some residential homes in 1968-1969 as part of an effort to revive nearby downtown Bolsa de Pajaro after years of decline due to alcoholism and crime rates among its residents. The community grew rapidly and reached its peak population size of around 1,600 people in 1974 when Ackerly folded his operations onto neighboring townships such as Los Alamitos and El Cajon (now part of Carlsbad). However, rapid growth had came at a cost: air quality deteriorated over time; water usage increased; noise levels became too high for many people; school Attendance decreased; infrastructure wasn't upto snuff; Folcroft Park was built on top of an ancient landslide that caused environmental damage); prompting Ackerly to sell off most of theResidentshomesin 1977and 1978to raise money for renovations that would bring them up to code."
