The United States Army Garrison Rancho Santa Margarita was founded in 1848 on a parcel of land that now includes the city of San Luis Obispo. The first American troops arrived in Whatcom County, Washington Territory, in late December 1849, and began garrisoning the nearby Pajaro Valley. In early 1850, General James K. Polk ordered Colonel George Armstrong Custer to abandon his campaign against the Sioux and march south to Sacramento to purchase more supplies for the army. On January 15, 1850, when Colonel Custer reached Rancho Santa Margarita after days of travel through harsh conditions, he found it abandoned by its original owners – the Barrios – who had emigrated from Mexico City some years earlier. In May 1870, Major General John B. Pershing ordered Lieutenant Colonel Edward Mudge to take over command of Rancho Santa Margarita from Captain Randall Fenton. By this time ranch hands numbered 2200; they grew increasingly independent as their rights as citizens were limited by military commands and militia laws passed at various times during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). In 1888–89Lieutenant Colonel Harry Henshaw organized a volunteer force called "The California Rangers" whose mission was to protect ranchers living along the southern border of California from rustlers and other desperados; these units patrolled hillsides and watered their crops near present-day Paso Robles and Camp Pendleton until disbanded in 1912. Rancho Santa Margarita changed hands several times between 1862 and 1886 before finally passing into private ownership in 1906. From then until 1916 it was used as a training ground for cavalry officers cadets at Fort Sill; thereafter it served as an enlisted barracks for Marines stationed at Corregidor Island adjacent to Laguna Beach until being sold off to become part of Point Mugu Naval Air Station in 1922 (the former site of West Point Naval Base). The property reverted back to civilian control following World War II when Interior Secretary Harold Ickes designated it reopened as an army post guard station under Army Reserve Command headquarters at Camp Arguello outside Redondo Beach. Army Headquarters moved out of San Luis Obispo on October 1st 1944 and returned on November 20th 1944 Upon returning all services were suspended due To World War II ended US forces pulled out leaving behind many equipment pieces scattered throughout Los Angeles area

The post served as a military depot, garrison and trading center for Mexican settlers in the area. In 1865, the post was renamed Fort Tejon after Major General John Tejon who had played a leading role in suppressing Californian Native American resistance to United States Expansion. The fort remained in service until it was replaced by Fort Huachuca in 1909.
Rancho Santa Margarita is a census-designated place in the San Diego County, California, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 9,769. The name comes from Rancho Santa Margarita de la Cruz or Rancho Sánchez del Rey which was granted to Francisco Palomo by Governor Manuel Nieto on November 1, 1846. The first post office at Rancho Santa Margarita was established in 1851 and named for Lieut. Gov't. Manuel Nieto's daughter who had married John Atherton (of Atherton & Co.) In 1876 the community changed its name to VillaMargarita when it became part of the city of San Diego. In 1904, it reverted back to its original name while still within the city limits of San Diego and then again in 1916 when it became an independent village status within the new City of San Diego boundaries.. In 1959 Rancho Santa Margaritaria became an unincorporated community located within present-day Escondido and Otay Mesa Parks Districts following approval by voters of incorporation as an unincorporated enclave inside those districts pursuant to Proposition 65 campaign promises made during that same election cycle. Voters rejected incorporation on two separate occasions – in 1965 and 1968 – but finally approved it on November 15th 1969 with a final vote total of 56% in favor over 44% against; this action set off a legal battle between developer Don Pritzker and residents who contended that they were effectively annexed into Escondido without any process or consent through their own choice while Pritzker contended that they had expressly agreed to become part of ESCONDIDO through their incorporation as a result of Prop 65 efforts). On July 16th 2005, after more than twenty years languishing under condemnation from developers due largely to persistent opposition by locals,Escondido Planning Commission voted 5-2 to allow development at Playa Vista/Westchester Estates adjacent to Interstate 805 interchange immediately east of I-805 along busy Westchester Boulevard across from Chula Vista High School - just one block south of where former owner Juan Gomez livered his infamous "Gomez Park" development proposal - signalling a formal beginning for what has come to be known as "Pritzkerville", centered around much larger developments being planned for Santana Row/South Broadway area immediately north/west thereof including several million square feet (~$1 billion) currently under construction or soon To Be Built projects already underway or near completion including large mixed use projects containing up to 220 residential units / 12 restaurants / 10 bars / 48 parking spaces = 2 million+ sq ft + 400+ jobs = massive redevelopment project spearheaded by millionaire Developer Phil Gramm amidst widespread public outcry over lack thereof coordination among various agencies involved throughoutSanDiego County dating back decades prior - overall creating unprecedented levels OF preoccupation amongst local property owners resulting in increased values & decreased accessibility relative TO other areas withinSAN DIEGO COUNTY since2006

After Mexican independence was granted in 1861, ranches such as Rancho Santa Margarita passed into American hands again until 1889 when they were sold to José Joaquín Herrera for $2 million.
