The California Coast Guard's Rancho Santa Margarita station has been providing law enforcement and emergency services along the Pacific coast since 1907. Stationed on a remote, steep-sided peninsula, the station was built to handle the increased demand for service caused by the influx of immigrants and refugees coming through San Diego and Tijuana. It was during this time that the Coast Guard began to provide gift shipments of clothing, shoes, belts, watches and other items to local residents in an effort to help them cope with their new surroundings. In 1959, the then-Rancho Santa Margarita Station became part of The Department of Defense's Military Assistance Command - Western Region. Rancho Santa Margarita is located in the hills of San Diego County, about an hour and a half drive northwest of downtown San Diego. The name comes from the mission that was founded there in 1797 by Father Junipero Serra. Rancho Santa Margarita was granted to José Borrego in 1821, and it became part of the Mexican land grant system known as Ranchos de California. In 1848, President James K. Polk designated Rancho Santa Margarita as part of the 851 ranchlands that were given to American citizens who had served in Mexico during the Mexican-American War. The area now comprising Rancho Santa Margarita was acquired by Jameson & Sons, builders of Interstate 5 and other major highways, in 1951. The first Europeans to visit Rancho Santa Margarita were Spanish Missionaries working with Father Junipero Serra. A road connecting Encinitas and Isla Vista was built through these hills by Captain Francisco Palomares in 1822 while he was stationed at San Ysidro on Cerritos Bayou serving as military governor for Alta California under Emperor Agustín de Iturbide. On July 1, 1824, Governor Palomares ordered the construction of a new mission at what is now known as Mission Valley on top of hill overlooking Encinitas Village which had been founded by Juan Bautista Numancia six years earlier on Coyote Hills southeast of present-day Voice Of America Tower (now known as Park View Terrace). In 1828 Don Fernando Vallejo purchased 640 acres encompassing most of what is now east Orange County including present-day Rancho Santa Margarita from Manuel Nieto y Costilla along with other adjacent lands grants for $5 per acre. By 1830 twoand onehalf miles long and wide dirt road called "the Road to Jesus" ran northeast from current day Mission Valley through what is now Yorba Linda and north into Anaheim Counties before turning westward near today's John Wayne Airport where it joined up with "the Road To Heaven." Highway 66 followed this route until its truncation near Irvine when it intersected I-5 south of Anaheim Stadium/Orange County Stadium interchange later renamed Autostrade 20/20 North incompletely rebuilt after 9/11 attacks due to fire risks associated with high intensity airport traffic!. It has been said that if it weren't for Disneyland then development would not have taken place along either side of I-5 between OC Metrocenter (Westminster) and Irvine Spectrum Center southwest ( Glassell Park) because both areas would have been within easily accessible urban sprawl! In 1850 Ramón Padilla sold 20% interest in Rancho Santa Margarita property east across Lake Hodges to General Mariano Escobedo thus becoming owner thereof until his death three years later. After Escobedo's death his widow donated all remaining interests held by her son Luis Antonio Padilla to various educational institutions including Playland Industries which developed Corona del Mar Naval Air Station originally used by US Navy World War II Fleet Air Arm pilots conducting air combat operations over southeastern California spotted Japanese submarines off Southern California during Operation Moondust! Luis Antonio's great-grandson Carlos Osorio currently owns much properties adjoining East Orange Street running inland along Harbor Boulevard including much valuable citrus fruit production land dating back more than 100 years! Today Castro Valley Village serves mainly as a bedroom community for eastern Riverside County residents commuting into Unincorporated Orange County or Los Angeles! Rancho Santa Margarita, California was founded in 1781 byadobe ranchers. The name comes from the Spanish word "santa" meaning "holy." The rancho was acquired by Mexico in 1821 and became part of the United States in 1848. In 1916, it became a state park. Rancho Santa Margarita is located about 20 miles east of San Diego on Interstate 8. It has a population of about 10,000 people and covers an area of 6 square miles.
In 1848, Mexican land grants were made to prominent Anglo families in the area. The Rancho Santa Margarita grant was given to José Joaquín Mora by Governor Manuel Micheltorena. The Moras ran a ranch near what is now Topanga Canyon and used it as a wintering ground for their cattle. In 1853, they sold the ranch to Juan Bautista Alvarado for $10,000. Alvarado began building a adobe church on the property in 1855, which became known as the Parish of La Purísima Concepción. In 1861, he donated part of his estate to the state of California in order to create an agricultural college at Fullerton. In 1870, he donated another piece of land – this time in Fillmore – to make room for the college and school facilities. The college was founded as an agricultural school with three departments: horticulture; agriculture; and veterinary medicine. It grew rapidly and soon had sixteen departments total (academics included). In 1932, it became known asFullerton State College and adult education was added as a fourth department that same year. On September 15, 1939, during World War II, Fullerton College was bombed by Japanese bombers while teaching students at night; only three students were reported injured but many buildings were destroyed or damaged beyond repair. On October 16th 1958, fullerton state college renamed itself California State University Fullerton after then-Governor George Deukmejian whose administration helped establish the university system in Orange County. The university has since grown into one of Southern California's largest universities with over 52 campuses throughout mainlandCaliforniaand Nevadarepresenting nearly 400 undergraduate degree programs from more than 120 faculties
