The first coffeehouses were opened in 1892 by José Gomez and Francisco Aguilar, two ranchers who were looking to start a new town on the banks of the San Gabriel River. In 1896, Rancho Santa Margarita was granted to Lorenzo de la Rúa and his brothers by Governor Peralta. This grant gave rise to the name of rancho Santa Margarita, which means "the place where Santa Margarita grows." The first coffeehouses in Rancho Santa Margarita were popular because they offered a unique experience: customers could come in and drink their own coffee while sitting inside an open-air building with views of the river. Later, cafes became more popular because they allowed customers to buy food and snacks as well as drinks. Some owners even set up small businesses within their cafes so that they could continue providing these unique experiences to residents of RanchoSantaMargarita. Over time, some of the most famous cafés in Rancho Santa Margarita have been founded by individuals or families who have held influential positions within their communities. These include Hector Yerba Buena's La Bodega del Palo (1909), Manuel Ortiz's El Cortejo (1915), Florencio Posada's La Fonda de la Esperanza (1920), Juan Valdez’s Centro Comercial Mexicano (1924), Fernando Poehler’s Café Mexico City (1930), Ricardo Montalban’s El Gordillo y las Demás Casas (1935) and Julio Iglesias' Pequeño Hotel Vicente Guerrero (1950). Rancho Santa Margarita, California is a small community located in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 4,052 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Victorville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Rancho Santa Margarita is located on the east side of San Bernardino County, about 12 miles (19 km) north-northwest of downtown Victorville and about 18 miles (29 km) east of Palm Springs. The name "Santa Margarita" was given to it by General Don José Vasquez de Balboa who explored and surveyed parts of what are now Los Angeles and Kern Counties in 1795-96 while commandant general of Mexico City’s Presidio de la Californía. In 1821, Governor Manuel Nieto granted Rancho Santa Margarita to Juan Bautista Navarro for his rancho at present day Ocotillo Road and East Gadsden Avenue; it comprised 640 acres (240 ha). In 1888 the town site was laid out with a single block in each direction on East Gadsden Avenue between Cherry and Oak Streets. A post office called Rancho Santa Margarita was established there on February 14th, 1889 under territorial mail order from Los Angeles via Janesville, Wisconsin. The first building erected at the town site were twoadobe huts which served as Post Office Annexes #1 & #2 until 1912 when an addition to annex #2 housed a two story frame schoolroom/library/theater created by Augustus Hahn in 1903. The first Mrs. Hahn donated land for an enlarged extension of her home which became known as Annexe No 3 after she died in 1907; this annexe included a large garage which served as Post Office Headquarters during World War II until that office moved to El Cajon in 1942.- An additional annex house (#4) also stood on property contiguous with early annex #3 but never built due to lack of funds or opposition from early settlers.– After Mrs. Hahn's death her estate sold all three parcels comprising today's annexed area including my maternal grandparents' farmstead situated southeast corner First Street - northeast corner Second Street extending thence across First Street just southward along Second Street - then easterly along Third Street back up ThirdStreet pretty much to its original line running northeasterly past my paternal grandparents' farmstead thence southwesterly down FourthStreet past their farmstead into today's annexation area.- This parcel now includes most of my maternal grandparents' former homeOWNED BY THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA.- From 1917 through 1951 there existed only one other structure within our boundaries: Our Storehouse which served as Laundromat for Post Office Employees housing mail received here.– Today's buildings were erected primarily becauseof the growth associated with General Motors plant added adjacent to earlier ranches named after John Fonda (now dual ranches east & west Gadsden avenues), Norma Jean Nixon (now eastern halfán avenue), Bing Crosby (later redwood avenue), Dean Martin (& wife Nancy Astaire), Jack Benny (& wife Jill Carey) & others employed therein during later years.– Upon completion of development work on currently existing campus including new Administration Building housing authorities offices & classrooms plus gymnasium/manual training facility newly constructed facilities will become available comprising approximately 1 square mile (.30 sq mi) more than pre-existing campus.—Today many people identify themselves as " ranchers" living off their land while others commute into Victorville or Palm Springs for workaday activities

The Rancho Santa Margarita, also known as the Rancho San Felipe, was a Mexican land grant given to Juan Bautista de Anza in 1824. It covered an area of present-day Sonoma County and parts of Northern California. The grant was later enlarged by other grants from Mexico City. The ranchos were divided into villages, each headed by a viceroy or governor. Santa Margarita Village was among the first villages founded in California. In 1851, the grant was sold to Jose Maria Alvarado y Costilla and it is now part of Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Santa Margarita has been called "the most beautiful place on earth." It is home to many natural wonders including several hills that have waterfalls on them, Wrightwood Canyon, and Guadalupe Peak. There are also many wine grapes growing here which are used for making red wine and sparkling wines.
Rancho Santa Margarita was founded in 1843 by Francisco Palomo and his wife. It became a part of Mexico in 1848. The rancho extended from the present-day town of Santa Margarita to what is now the city of Los Angeles. In 1886, Rancho Santa Margarita was sold to James Fenton and renamed Fenton Ranch. In 1907, it was sold again, this time to Harry Laughlin. The rancho continued to be run by family members until 1963 when it was purchased byPhilip Morris Companies for $2 million.
