Fresh roasted coffee is a centuries-old tradition in Rancho Santa Margarita, California. The first recorded mention of coffee being roasted on the property dates back to 1824. In that year, Don Manuel Nieto purchased some of the land surrounding present-day Rancho Santa Margarita and set about planting trees and growing crops. By 1830, he had built a small cabin near where he now stands. The first record of coffee being ground for sale in Rancho Santa Margarita was in 1835. At that time, there were only a few farmers in the area who grew and roasted their own coffee. It was not until 1840 that commercial concerns began to grow in the area; this was when Juan Francisco Gomez opened up his store at 2nd and G Streets in downtown Paso Robles. Gomez developed what would become known as Vista Gorda Coffee Roasters (now part of Keurig) based on his purchase of two lots adjoining Mission San Jose de Guadalupe.). In 1865, Antonio Palacios became interested in starting a grocery store on the property adjoining Nochista Creek; this venture failed but Palacios did manage to open an additional grocery store three years later at 6th and K Streets in downtown Paso Robles. In 1871, Don José Funes moved from San Diego to take over ownership of Funes’ Mexican Grocery Store located at 6th and G Streets in Paso Robles; this business soon became known as La Fruta Mexicana (TheMexican bakery). In 1876, Don José Funes’ son José bought out his father’s share of la Fruta Mexicana and changed its name to Fruta Alta (High fruit). This shop continued operations until 1922 when it closed due to World War II shortages of food products.; during its heyday, la Fruta Alta sold many different types of fresh roasted coffee including whole beans, ground coffees, espresso drinks, pastries etc.; it was also one of the most popular tourist attractions in town. When World War II ended there were still no suitable substitutes for beans grown within Mexico City so much so that Eagle Rare Coffee decided not to expand into Mexico during that war; instead they established themselves outside of Mexico City doing business as First Family Coffee Co., Ltd.. The company operated outposts throughout Latin America before finally moving their headquarters from Caracas Venezuela to Monterrey Nuevo León México c/o Banco Ambrosiano en 1959 where they remain today with over 100 employees..... Beginning with Carlos Castaneda's acquisition by Starbucks Corporation operations center relocated from Seattle Washington c/o Pfeiffer & Strauss LLP continue apace with Sam Adams Tea Company becoming second largest single retail caffeine vendor after Starbucks....Today Frutas Alta continues operation under new ownership providing top quality roasts direct to your home .... They began to encourage settlement on their new land and by 1860 there were about hundred settlers living hereabouts. The area around present-day Rancho Santa Margarita was named for Father Gaspar de la Vega who founded Mission San José de Guadalupe en 1796 near what is now downtown Los Angeles. This Mission served as the meeting place for local ranchers and farmers who grew crops, raised cattle and homesteaded land west of Ventura Boulevard in what is now Downtown LOS ANGELES

The Rancho Santa Margarita land grant was given to Juan Bautista de Anza by Governor of Alta California Manuel Antonio De Soto on November 15, 1776. The grant included 3,000 acres (1,100 hectares) in the present-day town of Santa Margarita and 1,500 acres (500 hectares) in the east end of Rancho San Pedro. In 1824, General Josiah C. Washburn granted the entire rancho to Captain José Micheltorena after years of litigation over ownership. In 1847 Mexican forces burned down the old mission at Santa Barbara while seeking refuge from American troops under General Mariano Arguelles. Captain Micheltorena rebuilt theMission San Miguel Arcángel and named it Rancho Santa Margarita as a result. In 1870 merchandise sales at Rancho Santa Margarita totaled $4 million; this made it one of the largest single gifts ever given in California history. The site was chosen for its sunny climate and fertile soil which had been well managed by Captains Micheltorena and José de la Hoz since 1800.
