Rancho Santa Margarita, California was founded in 1781 by José Manuel Nieto and his wife, María Inés Pacheco. The land on which the town now stands was first leased from the Mission San Gabriel de Asís. From 1819 to 1830, this mission was located just east of present-day Rancho Santa Margarita, and its lands were part of the property of the Recalde family. One of Rancho Santa Margarita's earliest settlers was José Francisco Gutiérrez y Costilla who arrived in 1824. He built a cabin on an old rancho that is still standing and remained there until his death in 1872. His son Andrés Gutiérrez y Costilla also lived in Rancho Santa Margarita for many years. During the Mexican War (1846-1848), Rancho Santa Margarita came under American control as part of Mexico. On October 15, 1847, Antonio Sepúlveda purchased some land near present-day Paso Robles from Don Felipe Calderón for $2,500 cash. On November 3, 1847 he sold this land to José Joaquín Murillo for $10 per acre ($320 per mile). After purchasing these tracts of land, Sepúlveda named his new place after himself: "Rancho Santiago de Murillo". The first post office at Rancho Santiago de Murillo was established on December 12th, 1850; it served as a return stop on stagecoaches between Los Angeles and San Diego. It is interesting to note that major mail shipments arriving at or leaving San Francisco via Stagecoach Road traveled through Paso Robles before reaching San Diego; therefore it is likely that ranchers on both sides of the border received parcels here as well! The name "Santa Margarita" changed hands several times during its early history; it finally became official when Governor Pico used it for differentiation between two missions within Mission Dolores: "San Antonio del Norte" (founded in 1795) and "El Alamo" (founded in 1800). In 1860s much development took place within ranchos surrounding what is now downtown SantaMargaritaville due to large numbers settlement by Californios accompanying General Hardee’s army during their march across Southern California during the Lincoln Rebellion against Ulysses S Grant’s America! The following year saw annexation by Mexico with all but 2 outposts remaining United States territory under Mexican sovereignty! Don Vicente Guerrero acquired title to 1/4 mile square piece of adjoining real estate known as Cerritos Mesa late 1800’s .. After becoming interested Fernando Rey organized community formed around Cerritos Mesa with housing “Por la Casa Grande” largest house had been erected . little remains today only foundations remain

Rancho Santa Margarita, California is located in Sonoma County and is a census-designated place (CDP) with a population of 9,898. It is adjacent to the town of Santa Rosa and the unincorporated community of Petaluma. The CDP includes the villages of Glen Ellen and Menlo Park. The first Europeans to visit Rancho Santa Margarita were San Francisco Bay Area traders in 1824, who named it for Saint Margaret's Monastery in Scotland. In 1853, General John Brougham granted 160 acres (70 ha) of Rancho Santa Margarita to Captain George A. Smith on the condition that he build a cabin thereon for his wife. Mrs. Smith was also given an acre (0.30 ha) of land east of her husband's cabin as a garden plot. In 1860, Colonel Augustus Woodward purchased 160 acres (70 ha) north-central portion of Rancho Santa Margarita from Captain Smith for $2,500 (). Colonel Woodward then divided this land into 42 tracts and sold them to farmers throughout California.. The last sale was made in 1922 to Mr./Mrs.(first name unknown), who conveyed it to their son., Jr., who stillowns it today.. A post office called Petaluma was established at Rancho Santa Margarita on January 15, 1851, by order of Governor Manuel Antonio Camacho.. On May 3rd 1870 Mexican revolutionary patriot Emiliano Zapata organized a cavalry raid into Sonoma County near Petaluma that resulted in the death or capture fifteen men including three Californios named José María Morelos (), Antonio Lopez de la Torre () and Fernando Ortiz de Montoya (). This event helped spur American entry into Mexican nationals living within U.S.-controlled territory during the late 19th century through military occupation until Mexico achieved its independence from Spain in 1912.

Rancho Santa Margarita is a ranch located in central California. The land was donated to the United States by José Garza and his wife, Catalina Cisneros Garza, in 1846. The ranch has been in the Garza family since then. In 1920, the Rancho Santa Margarita School District was created from portions of other ranches within the school district. On September 14, 1925, the first post office at Rancho Santa Margarita opened. The last mail delivery from Rancho Santa Margarita took place on October 1, 1978. The ranch included 6,000 acres (24 km²) of woodlands and meadows that were used for grazing animals and hay production. Today only a small amount of farm land remains on the original donation. A number of businesses have operated on the ranch over the years including cattle ranchers who pastured their animals there during winter months; a winery which produced wine for sale around town; and a few homes which still stand today but are not used as residences due to concerns about fire danger from open flames on some of the older buildings. The area now known as Rancho Santa Margarita was first settled by Spanish settlers in 1769 when they arrived at San Luis Obispo de Baja California under Miguel Costilla y Márquez de Arguelles with 10 horses and 1 mule team looking for gold prospecting sites along present-day Anacapa Boulevard east of Point Conception Bayou.
