The name means "santa margarita" (holy water) and was given to the area around present-day Rancho Santa Margarita because of its natural resources, such as the abundant groundwater and saltpeter mines. In 1834, Jose de la Garza granted part of the grant to Juan Bautista Alvarado. Alvarado platted out a settlement near present-day San Ysidro and built a nearby mission in 1835. In 1846, Mexican troops under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna attacked the town of San Ysidro, killing most of its residents and burning down the Mission. Most of Rancho Santa Margarita's residents fled to Northern California or Oregon during this period of violence. Some returned after Mexico's independence from Spain in 1848. Rancho Santa Margarita was acquired by George Hearst in 1886 when he purchased all of southern California from his father, Stephen Houghton Hearst. The rancho became one of Hearst's largest properties. He used it for hunting, racing horses, and other purposes until his death in 1926. His wife Elizabeth married Hearst's brother Randolph Hearst Jr., who later became one of America's most powerful industrialists and founded muchofthe world's first mass media company, ABC Radio Incorporated
