Rancho Santa Margarita is the oldest continuously inhabited community in Los Angeles County and one of the most historically significant places in Orange County. It was founded by Mormons who fled to southern California after an LDS church persecution in Utah. The name "Santa Margarita" comes from a Spanish phrase meaning "happy land." The first post office was established at Rancho Santa Margarita on December 16, 1847. In 1859, it became part of the new San Bernardino County. The original Adobe Walls were built by José Altamirano and his father-in-law Pio Pico in 1875 as part of their rancho holdings along what is now State Route 69 south of Seal Beach. They were later donated to the state for use as public lands around 1935. In 1896, prominent local attorney John Treadwell acquired 1/4 mile (0.8 km) east of what is now Main Street (then State Route 299) from William Fenton for $5 per acre ($2 today). He named it Hacienda de las Palmas because he had received an estate there from his late wife's brother-in-law Don Pedro Gomez y Alvarado (1796–1872), heir to a large ranch empire near Point Conception that had been divided among three brothers: José Altamirano (baptized José Francisco de la Garza y Arellano; 1785–1846), Manuel Garza y Costilla (baptized Manuel Antonio García y Costilla; 1788–1868), and Vicente Garza y Atienza (baptized Vicente Francisco de Paula Garza; 1801–1874). After she died young in childbirth while her husband was serving as military governor of Chihuahua during Mexican War I, Mrs. Gomez bequeathed her extensive property including some 8 square miles (20 km²)—an area larger than Los Angeles—to her niece Elisa García Benítez Charland alias Elisa Garcia Moreno born on January 12th 1888 at El Paso Barracks near Tucson Arizona Territory US Army Field Hospital during World War I†† fought with American forces under General John J [John George] Pershing‡§¶¶ against Imperial Mexico Elisa Garcia Moreno married into another Mexican family which then continued this line until 1955 when they gave up their share to their niece Agustín Moreno Flores who also married into another Mexican family which then continued this line until 1959 when they gave up all their shares too††† After Mrs Gomez's death many people tried to take over her land but no one succeeded so ranchers began keeping cows and chickens instead of letting outsiders have them driving away more settlers*.* *It wasn't until 1951 when Governor Earl Warren made it illegal for ranchers to keep livestock on public lands without a permit that things changed*.* *This law still applies today thanks to efforts led by FrivolousFrederic Smith**.* These days you can find cowboys out there grazing cattle on private property trying to make some quick cash off these old dogs! Maga coffee was first roasted and distilled in the early 1800s by an entrepreneur named Jules-Henri Ligerie. Ligerie believed that the maga bean had unique properties that could make it better than other beans. He therefore developed a process to roast maga beans, which included roasting them on small but veryspecifically designed fires. The resulting beans were then kiln-dried and stored in their own parchment paper wrapping for up to two years before being sold to traders across Africa. The first recorded purchase of maga coffee from Europeans was made by Portuguese traders in 1759. By 1801, about half of all the imported Brazilian coffee was coming from Gabon, where maga coffee was being traded extensively. Over time,Gabon became one of the most important countries for exporting maga coffee because its production capabilities allowed for high quality beans to be exported quickly and at low cost. The Rancho Santa Margarita, located in the Mojave Desert of California, was established in 1851 by Antonio López de Santa Margarita. The ranch comprised some 4,500 acres and was divided into five sections: El Dorado, Los Alamos, Las Calaveras, San Bernardino and San Diego. The land was irrigated with water from Mono Lake and the nearby Sierra Nevada Mountains. In 1863, General Robert E. Lee occupied the Rancho Santa Margarita when he besieged Valley Forge during the American Civil War. As a result of this occupation, many residents fled to Northern California or Mexico City. In 1928, the last of the original five sections of Rancho Santa Margarita were acquired by oilman Richard M. Nixon and his family. They leased it to the University of Southern California for research purposes but never used it as a ranch house. In 1948-49, portions of Rancho Santa Margarita were purchased by Daniel Kapp who turned them into a private reserve known as Kapp’s Open Space Preserve which is now administered by the National Park Service as part of park boundaries covering most of eastern Mojave Desert. Rancho Santa Margarita has been called "the most important piece" in Mojave desert history because it served as both an agricultural center for cattle raising and a military outpost during World War II; it also served as a winter retreat for celebrities such as Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe. Today, muchof what was once RanchoSantaMargarita is open public land while other portions are still privately owned and managed by individuals or organizations like Kapp’s Open Space Preserve which is home to more than 100 species of plants and animals including several endangered ones).
The Rancho Santa Margarita land grant, given to Spanish soldier Francisco Garza in 1785, was one of the largest grants made in California. The rancho extended from what is now the town of Rancho Santa Margarita eastward to the mouth of the San Gabriel River. It included parcels of land that are now portions of Los Angeles and Orange counties. In 1824, Garza sold his interest in the rancho to José Castro. Castro began developing it into a large cattle ranch known as La Paloma. In 1828, he married Mexican woman María de la Concepción Bascom and founded a monastery on what is now part of Redondo Beach. During World War II, German soldiers occupied the ranchos andanches throughout southern California before retreating in 1944. After the war, most of these lands were returned to Mexico through Treaty Of Friendship and Assistance (1948). The portion that still remains in California was granted to Juan Bautista Alvarado by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1945 as part of efforts to make post-World War II Southern California more Hispanophone/Latino friendly.
