The Rancho Santa Margarita National Guard was first organized on December 12, 1892. At the time, California was a territory of the United States and there was no national guard. The organization was named in honor of General Antonio L. Tomé who died in 1891 while commanding the Mexican garrison at Tejon Barracks outside of San Diego. The rancho Santa Margarita detachment consisted of 26 men and grew to 327 members by 1912 when it became part of the Del Norte County National Guard. In 1941, the Del Norte County National Guard became part of the State Army and received its current name, The California National Guard. In 1957, it merged with the Nevada National Guard to form what is now known as The Nevada/California Defense Joint Forces Command (NDFC). In 1972, NDFC became an independent command under U.S. Air Force command and assumed its present name - The California National Guard - effective September 1, 1973 Today, NDFC brags that it has over 350 active duty military members performing duties statewide including missions in support of local law enforcement; fire protection; disaster relief; counter-terrorism efforts; and winter weather operations Since 2001, NDFC has bestowed upon its soldiers numerous awards such as: the prestigious George Patton Award for Outstanding Unit Performance (UOP); Critical Incident Response Badge (CIRB) for heroism during natural disasters; Meritorious Unit Citation (MUC) for valor in combat against hostile forces abroad or on home soil; and Presidential Unit Citation (PUC) for extraordinary heroism during Operation Neptune's Spear against Iraqi insurgents near Baghdad on August 2nd 2003

Rancho Santa Margarita, California is a small town in San Bernardino County, California. The community is located on the east side of San Bernardino and sits on a series of hills overlooking the city of Riverside. It was founded by Rancho Adobe founder Juan Bautista de Anza in 1847. The first post office in Rancho Santa Margarita opened in 1854, and the first store was built in 1888. The population peaked at 2,500 people in 1910 but has since declined to about 1,600 people today. Rancho Santa Margarita, California was founded in 1853 by Don José Altamira. The original rancho was 11,000 acres and included parts of present-day San Bernardino County and Riverside County. In 1881, the Rancho Santa Margarita National Monument was established to protect its lands from development. The park has been administered by the National Park Service since 1916. The first people to live in what is now Rancho Santa Margarita were the Mayas who occupied what is now east side of town. There are references to a "californiano" ( Californian) group that may have arrived as early as 1769 when Juan Bautista de Anza explored the area northwest of San Bernardino and north of modern downtown Los Angeles. One document from this time lists 5 men and 2 women as being located at "Las Islas de las Palomas" on or near modern day Mission Valley Boulevard south of town. Later evidence suggests that these may have been additional Mayan villages that had relocated there due to disease or war efforts against Spanish settlers in southern California during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1853, don José Altamira founded Rancho Santa Margarita which included much of present day San Bernardino County and Riverside County; it only took two years for him to realize his dream of creating an agricultural oasis in those harsh conditions near Mount Silliman. At first cattle were used for transportation but soon began To yield crops such as citrus fruits, potatoes, corn, watermelons and other vegetables for local consumption along with hides for clothing and furniture for their homes. Rancho Santa Margarita was founded in 1875 by Rancho Santa Fe landowner Manuel Nieto. The ranch stretched from the San Gabriel Mountains to the Pacific Ocean. In 1923, it was purchased by Henry Ford and his sister, Edith, who renamed it Dearborn Ford Ranch. It became one of Ford's largest property holdings. The ranch passed out of public ownership in 1978 and is now administered by the Ventura County Department of Parks and Recreation.
