The navy gift history in Rancho Santa Margarita, California goes back to at least 1892. In that year, the first navy ship, USS Delaware, arrived in San Diego. The ship was christened by Commodore John D. Stockton and was used for shipment of goods between San Diego and Casa de Mexico on the Mexican side of the Panama Canal. The USS Delaware served as a flagship for Commodore George Dewey during his campaign against Spanish forces in 1898. The ship also played a major role in American victory over Spain at the Battle of Manila Bay. In 1931, the USS Constitution was stationed at Naval Station Coronado when it became known as "the last great battleship of World War I." That same year, Naval Station Coronado also became home to one of America's first naval air stations when NAS Miramar opened its doors. In 1945, NAS Miramar closed its doors after more than 40 years of service. However, it reopened two years later as part of Marine Corps Air Station El Centro (MCAS El Centro). NAS Miramar served as an important base for operations during Operation Desert Storm and later Operation Iraqi Freedom. After MCAS El Centro's closure in 2006, NAS Miramar again reopened as an airport under Navy Department jurisdiction but with civilian control until 2017 when it reverted back to military control following a decision by then-Defense Secretary Robert Gates. Rancho Santa Margarita is a small, rural community in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County. The name originates from Rancho Santa Margarita del Rey, a Spanish military post and later ranch which was ceded to the United States by Mexico in 1848. The community began as a small settlement of Anglo-American farmers on the edge of present day La Cañada Flintridge and El Monte. By 1870, the population had grown to over 1,000 people. In 1916, after World War I ended and America entered into a period of economic depression, the community's population decreased again to around 500 people. However, due to new development in nearby La Crescenta and Silver Lake, Rancho Santa Margarita experienced significant growth in the early 21st century The history of Rancho Santa Margarita begins with Mexican land grants given to American soldiers and civilians during California's Mexican-American War (1846-1847). After Mexico became an independent nation following that war, various U.S. citizens acquired large tracts of land east of Los Angeles County for cattle raising and other purposes. One such individual was James Irvine who organized what is now known as Irvine Co., one of Southern California's largest commercial companies. In 1850, James Irvine granted two parcels of land located near today's La Cañada Flintridge area to Elias Wertheim for $10 per acre ($2 per foot). Wertheim sold these areas back to Irvine within two years. In 1855 Don Carlos Meneses purchased some additional lands east of present day La Crescenta from James Irvine for $3 per acre ($0.50 per foot). With this purchase Menes made Rancho Santa Margarita one of the most extensive sheep ranches in Southern California. Today Menes' descendants continue farming this landbanking property which has been used for grazing since at least 1840 As time passed some additional settlers moved into Rancho Santa Margarita including American Civil War veteran John Sutter who founded Sutter’s Mill onsite in 1872 . By 1890 there were about 100 residents living on ranchos scattered throughout eastern Riverside County (specifically San Bernardino County) while only 10 people lived at Rancho SantaMargaritabank . By 1912 there were just 50 residents living on or near ranchos scattered throughout southern San Gabriel Valley . However by 1916 when America entered World War I demand for munitions increased greatly across all sectors so according to local historian Alfred Loomis much more than 500 people lived throughout agricultural subdivisions dotting both sides of Pasadena Creek between 1915-1920 The post-World War I economy crashed nationally leading many Americans out Of work however not everyone left their homes – many decided they would rather live close enoughto still have access To markets but far enough away From cities that they felt uncomfortable being city slickers During prohibition era many men elected To become alcoholics rather then return To work once Prohibition ended but because alcohol prohibition was sanctioned by state government it became very difficult For women To obtain liquor licences which led Many women TO start their own businesses directly selling liquor instead Of through licensed distributors like their male counterparts
