The history of the Rancho Santa Margarita Police Department gift shop begins with one man, Harvey Gold. Harvey Gold was born in 1907 in San Bernardino County, California and died in 1984. He was an American soldier who served in World War II and the Korean War. After his service, he decided to move to Rancho Santa Margarita and start a small business. The first store that Harvey Gold opened was called The Gilded Cage. It was a gift shop that sold items such as jewelry, watches, and other fine gifts. From this store, Harvey Gold began to sell police officers gifts. These gifts were usually made to celebrate officer's promotions or special events. over time, other stores opened up within the rancho Santa margarita area and more Gifts became available for purchase from the department's gift shop. Rancho Santa Margarita, located in the Kern County of California, is a parcel of land that has been in the hands of the same family for generations. The ranch was first established by Juan Bautista de Anza, who purchased it from local Native Americans in 1769. The name “Santa Margarita” was given to the property by his wife, Catalina de Anza. Rancho Santa Margarita was originally an agricultural community with cattle and sheep grazing on its meadows and hills. In 1876, Agustín Lerdo became the first American settler on Rancho Santa Margarita. He built a cabin here and started raising horses for transportation to markets in nearby towns. In 1886, he subdivided the ranch into five parcels and sold them off to other settlers. By 1912, only 10% of Rancho Santa Margarita remained under Mexican ownership. The rest had been acquired by American miners and their families who had begun calling it “The Deserted Domain” because they did not have title to it until after World War II when it was ceded back to Mexico as part of a peace agreement between America and Mexico over disputed borderlands. The land now known as Rancho Santa Margarita was acquired by José Mejía Magaña in 1923 from some of the American holdings in what is now Southern California. Mejía Magaña began developing it into a citrus grove and cattle farm which became one of Northern California’s most important ranches during World War II when much needed food supplies came through from southern California via Los Angeles Airport (now LAX). When Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 causing world-wide economic collapse,MAGAANA decided that oranges were too valuable an exports commodity to be allowed to fall victim to enemy action; consequently he ordered all his fruit trees destroyed so that there would be no evidence leading back to him or anyone else about where any oranges had come from! This story goes back further still - AGUILARES FERREIRA bought out MAGAANA’S interest in SANTA MARGARITA RANCHO FOR $2 MONEY! Rancho Santa Margarita, California was founded in 1849 by Captain Don Miguel de la Hoz as Rancho San Miguel. The 1,500 acre ranch was located on the site of present-day Mission San Gabriel and it became a part of the Mexican Empire after Mexico won its independence from Spain in 1821. The Spanish name for the area, "Rancho San Miguel," means "Saint Maurice's Ranch." The first post office at Rancho San Miguel was established in 1851. In 1863, General George Custer and his cavalry unit were stationed at Rancho Santa Margarita during the American Civil War and they left behind evidence of their stay when they burned down a hacienda belonging to Governor Pico de la Mirada. In 1906, Californio ranchers formed the Soquel Valley Land and Water Company to purchase 1,200 acres (490 ha) of land east of Highway 101 near Redwood National Park. They named their new company Rancho Santa Margarita after St. Margaret's Church on their property. The original owner/manager of the ranchos who made these purchases was Amedeo Gomez del Valle y Soto y Garza (Amedeo Gomez). After Amedeo Gomez died in 1917, his wife Myriam ("Mimi") took over management until her death in 1944. After Mimi's death, her son Fernando took over management until he died in 1984. Then came daughter-in-law Dolores Olvera Castleman until her death in 2003; then Third Generation Manager Linda Castillo has been managing this property since 2004 with help from her niece Kristina Olvera Castro through her husband Hector Castro's business interests outside of ranching.
