Red Bluff, California is a small town in Kern County, in the southern part of California. It is located on the banks of the Sacramento River, about 25 miles (40 km) south of downtown Los Angeles. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit Red Bluff was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo who landed there on October 15, 1769 with the Spanish expedition led by Gaspar de Portolà. In 1821, American Commodore John C. Fremont explored and mapped much of what is now Kern County and named it for his friend and neighbor General James K. Polk who had commanded Fremont's force at Palo Alto during the Mexican-American War years earlier. Red Bluff developed rapidly as a result of its location along the riverbanks and its access to water supplies from both upstream and downstream. Cotton farming became an important industry early in Red Bluff's history; but since cotton was not very profitable until after railroads arrived in the area in 1881, development outside of agriculture gradually began to take hold. Today Red Bluff remains an agricultural Mecca with many businesses based there such as grocers, meatpackers, farmers' markets and nursery plants that serve local residents and tourists alike. The town also has several restaurants including one which specializes exclusively in sustainably raised seafood products grown onsite or nearby within120 miles (193 km). Red Bluff, California is a small town in the Sacramento Valley of Northern California that lies on the east side of the Stanislaus River. The population was 1,811 as of the 2010 census. It is located within Butte County and within easy driving distance of both Yosemite National Park and Redding Municipal Airport. The area now known as Red Bluff was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. The first documented European sighting of Red Bluff occurred in 1820 when Captain George Dixon sighted land to the south and west of present-day Red Bluff on his way from Folsom Lake to Colusa Lake. Red Bluff was platted as a town in 1851, and it became an incorporated city in 1907. As an agricultural center, Red Bluff became known for its large fig trees, cottonwood trees, tomatoes, honeydews (a type of fruit), and other crops. In 1916, a major fire destroyed most of downtown business district but not before causing much damage to property including several churches and a schoolhouse that were rebuilt using local lumber. In 1939, prior to World War II becoming active in Europe, many American servicemen residing in Southern California went into service at nearby Yuma Naval Air Station under provisions set aside for military personnel during wartime times by then-President Franklin D. Roosevelt with plans for them all eventually returning home after hostilities ended. General Leslie Riggs also helped develop Yuma into one of Arizona's largest aviation centers during this time period with such aircraft manufacturers as Boeing & McDonnell Douglas having their plants there until 1975 when they merged with Beechcraft Corporation to form United Aircraft Industries (UAL). During these years many employees from UAL's Redding plant built homes elsewhere around town while some continued working at UAL until its closure following the merger which left many people without jobs locally altogether; however some have returned since then such as retired Mayor Donny Schmidt who still lives in town today despite living only five miles away from his old job location when he retired.) However southwestern Californians throughout our region remain Generally supportive notwithstanding various efforts made recently by various elected officials overtly or covertly associated w/that goal although admittedly less publicized than w/ previous administrations); albeit one must constantly monitor lest any particular outcome may become Preferably undesirable should things continue trending downward indefinitely!
Red Bluff was founded in 1853 by Jedediah Smith and his brother-in-law, Clapperton. The town was named for the bluff on which it was located. It became a post office in 1857, and soon developed into a small farming community with two churches and several businesses. In 1865, Red Bluff hosted the first meeting of the California Gold Rush Association. By 1870, the population had reached 100 residents. That year, Red Bluff also became the site of an unsuccessful attempt to build a railroads through California.
