Red Bluff is a small community located in the Mokelumne River Valley of California. The name "Red Bluff" was given to it by the Spanish, who named it after the Red River which runs through the town. It lies on high ground near the confluence of two rivers, one of which forms Lake Oroville. The first Europeans to visit Red Bluff were travelers looking for an easy route to Central Valley wine country. They found only high mountains and barren valleys, but they named the place San Francisco because they thought it might be similar to Spain's San Fancisco. In 1847, surveyors discovered gold in what is now Gold Hill and began trying to find a way into town. A wagon road was built from Sacramento through Red Bluff, but it failed because of bad roads and falls that blocked downhill travel. In 1849, Mexican troops under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna sacked Fort Yuma and burned down much of Valencia County before being driven back by United States forces under Colonel John Cushing. This opened up new mining opportunities for Californians and further shortened the amount of time needed for transportation between towns in California. In 1855, when Gold Rush fever swept across Northern California, people started coming to Red Bluff from all over California looking for their share of luck in what was then called "the golden age." The first hotel opened in 1857 and soon there were four or five stores with provisions and clothing available for sale only from within town limits. One store did so well that it became a general store with goods available throughout central valley counties as well as Reno Nevada By 1860, local citizens had built a schoolhouse (now part of the historical Museum), churches (one Roman Catholic - Our Lady Of Good Counsel), a post office (1859), three stores (all operated as general stores), three-quarters of a mile (~0.8 km) wide road connecting all these buildings together known as Main Street; two hotels; several cottages; an assay office; water tower; sawmill; blacksmith shop; butter churning plant; flour mill; shoe factory 1:00 p.m.–11:00 p .m., 2:00 p .m.–6:00 p .m.; 7:00 p .m.–12:30 a .m.; 1/2 moonlight service on Sundays

The bluffs were an important natural feature in early Red Bluff history because they provided a defensive position against Native Americans who frequented the area. The first post office in Red Bluff was established on January 1, 1849. On July 15, 1850, the first road into Red Bluff was built from Fort Tejon to the northeast corner of town. At this time, Red Bluff consisted of only a few buildings and a few families. On November 9, 1848, Commodore David Fincastle's squadron of Ulysses S. Grant's navy arrived at San Francisco and anchored off shore at Point Reyes Station. Commodore Fincastle then ordered his flagship USS Constitution (Whipple) to anchor opposite Point Reyes Station so that all ships could disembark their passengers and supplies ashore before continuing their voyage northward to Santa Cruz County. Admiral Amos Kendall assisted in disembarking the troops and supplies at Point Reyes Station while Commodore Fincastle himself landed with his squadron onshore at San Francisco Bayou Palace on November 11th near where he would later reside for eight years as Mayor of San Francisco
