Red Bluff is a small town in California, located on the eastern border of Fresno County and the Kern River Valley. The population was 1,977 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. Red Bluff has been a stop on stagecoaches since 1848, when it was founded as Horseback depot on the banks of the Kern River by Major James Hutton and his father-in-law, John Cushing. The first post office in Red Bluff was established in 1854. The first store opened in 1861. A Methodist Episcopal church was built in 1865 and dedicated by General Ulysses S. Grant during his visit to California that year. The name "Red Bluff" came from an Adobe Walls post office box which had a red blossom on its door handle as souvenir for visitors to Red Bluff from their home state of Texas (then part of Mexico). In 1875, Jules Boudreau opened a general store and grocery at what is now called Main Street and Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard in Red Bluff; he became one of the early settlers hereabouts. In 1906 he donated land along main street for a new high school; today's Red Bluff High School was founded there that same year after years of planning by local citizens and educators including Mrs. Florence Nightingale Bemis (1887-1976), daughter of Rear Admiral George Washington Bemis (1847-1925) who served with distinction during World War I as commanding officer of Destroyer Squadron 11 based at San Diego Naval Station where she later directed shipyards operations ashore while also teaching elementary school science classes ashore before retiring as superintendent emeritus thereof after more than fifty years' service thereto).
