The name comes from a bluff across the San Joaquin River from where pioneer settlers first saw the potential for cultivation and development in this area. Red Bluff was platted in 1847 by Captain James Irvine and his friends as Rancho Rinconada. In 1849, Captain Irvine sold the land to José Baca and others who named it after their father-in-law, Manuel de la Hoz y Ortega. In 1875, an irrigation canal was built through Red Bluff and much of nearby Isabella County. This gave rise to a boom in agriculture that continues to this day; cattle, hay, grains, potatoes and cotton are some of the main crops grown here today. The community experienced another period of prosperity during World War II when many local businesses supported military production thanks to its proximity to major supply chains. However, since then things have generally been more modest with few changes to residents’ lifestyles or economic conditions since then other than occasional natural disasters such as fires or earthquakes which can cause significant damage hereabouts
