Air Force gift history in Redding, California goes back to the early days of the Air Force. The first airmen in the Air Force were recruited from Redding, and today, we continue to support our local community with a strong military presence. The United States Air Force was founded on September 18th 1947 when President Harry S. Truman signed legislation creating it as an independent service within the United States government. The Air Force mission is “to provide leadership and contribute to national security through aerial operations”. Today, there are over 270,000 members of the USAF stationed worldwide. In Redding, we have a strong military presence which has helped our community grow since World War II. Our Armed Forces have played a significant role in making Redding one of America’s most economically vibrant communities and our Armed Forces Museum is proud to showcase this history and culture. Throughout its history, the Air Force has given back to Redding through donation of equipment and services; education grants; volunteerism; fundraising events; and more! Forged relationships with local businesses have helped us build strong ties with our community while also supporting our Armed Forces missions all around the world. On Dec. 21, 1942 the Redding Municipal Airport was opened with a military airfield. The airport was named after General George C. Marshall, who served as the Army Chief of Staff during World War II. After World War II ended in 1945, the military closed the airport and it reverted to civilian use. On Nov. 3, 1948 the United States Air Force Base Redding was established at the airport and it became an important hub for US fighter planes flying into and out of California during the Cold War era. The base operated until 1991 when it was moved to Tyndall AFB in Florida due to budget cuts.

Redding, California is a city located in the state of California. The population was 118,671 at the 2010 census. The current mayor is John Suthers and the City Council consists of 14 members. It is one of the most culturally diverse cities in America with a wide variety of cultures represented. Redding was founded on December 3, 1873 by American gold miner James Irvine and his partner George Fenton as an agricultural town to support hismining operation. The first post office in Redding opened on January 6, 1875. On July 16, 1877, Redding became part of Imperial County when it was organized from parts of Siskiyou and Tehama counties. In 1901, Redding incorporated as a city under State law No. 314-A which allowed for more rapid growth due to its strategic location between Sacramento and San Francisco Bay Area Cities (Fremont and San Jose). On June 4, 1937 Redding's first professional football team,,the Golden Bears RFC played their inaugural game against visiting Northern States Football Association club Aurora Tigers at Recreation Park Stadium before a crowd of 10,000 spectators including Governor Earl Warren who attended as an honorary guest! The Bears lost that game 7-0 but made history winning their second game against rival Eureka on September 20th 7-3 before another large crowd at Recreation Park Stadium which saw them beat Eureka 25-14! After losing their third game to eventual champions Auburn on October 15th by forfeit they achieved their first championship by defeating defending champions Sacramento 11-6 in front of over 50,000 fans at Empire Field! That season they also became only the 2nd team ever to win back to back league titles (the other being Los Angeles Rams who did it twice!). By 1944 they had merged with nearby Roseville into what would become Anaheim city Limits
Redding was founded in 1868 by James Irvine and his brother John. The town was named for the red earth that is found in the area. In 1870, Redding became a city and soon began to grow as a cotton-growing town. The population reached 10,000 by 1880. By 1890, the city had expanded to encompass a total of 52 square miles (158 square kilometers).
