Army deployments have a long and varied history in Redding, California. The Redding Army Depot was established in 1887 as the first American military base outside of San Francisco Bay. The post became an important center for munitions production during World War I, and the Redding Arsenal was built in 1925 to store ammunition from around the world. In 1951, the United States Air Force made Redding their main bomber station, and the Army Base Annex was built onsite to house this new wing. The Post Office moved out of town in 1959, but the Army Base Annex still remains a vital part of Redding’s infrastructure today. The U.S. Marines landed at Cape Gloucester in December 1941 during World War II, and within months had erected a airfield and installation called Marine Corps Air Station Kodiak (MCAS Kodiak). MCAS Kodiak served as headquarters for both Marine Corps aviation operations throughout World War II and also functioned as an operational training ground for future Marines. During the Korean War, MCAS Kodiak again served as Headquartersmarine Forces Far East (HMEF) before transitioning to Marine Aircraft Group 8th Fleet which operated fighter aircraft from it until its disbandment in 1954. It is interesting to note that while HMEF operated from MCAS Kodiak during World War II, when Marine Aircraft Group 8th Fleet operated from Okinawa they were known as “Marine Light bombers” since their role was limited to providing support for Navy fighters operating against Japan instead of facing enemy warplanes head-on. In 1955, Naval Station Kings Bay (later Naval Air Station North Island) opened onshore at what is now Point Reyes National Seashore Boulevard adjacent to MCAS Kodiak; Kings Bay would be homeport for NAS North Island until its closure in 1976 when it moved ashore at Monterey Harbor adjacent to US Coast Guard Station Monterey/Yuma County Finally, after years of planning and construction one of America’s largest naval installations – NAVSEA Yokosuka – arrived onshore at Point Reyes National Seashore Boulevard beginning Operation Neptune’s Spear on Febuary 1st 1967 becoming USS Enterprise (CVN-65).. NAVSEA Yokosuka would serve both naval commands ashore with Destroyer Squadron 5 based there plus numerous other units including Helicopter squadron 3rd Fleet based there plus various types of submarines .. finally amassing over 12000 enlisted Sailors she closed down on October 31st 1977 leaving behind her massive equipment stores which are now being used by local businesses doing business with Federal Aviation Administration - FAA run facilities . . . Redding, California is a city located in the Central Valley of California. The population of Redding was 382,912 at the 2010 census. The fort served as a base for operations during his campaign against Mexico and also helped solidify American control over central California. In 1868, Major General George Armstrong Custer discovered gold near Redding; this led to increased settlement in what is now Redding and other towns surrounding it. In 1871–72, Mayor John Waddell established public works projects such as an irrigation ditch, water reservoir, schoolhouse, cemetery, and parkland around town to promote economic development while also providing social services such as health care and housing for low-income residents. The first railway into Redding arrived here in 1885 when Southern Pacific Railroad built a line south from Stockton via Milpitas Junction to connect with the Sacramento Northern Railway at Tracyville.* On November 30th 1905 local citizens erected a cross on top of Mount Shasta which marked the beginning of downtown redevelopment that would include new hotels/motels/restaurants/theatre/a shopping center* Downtown redevelopment continued through much of the 20th century with one major interruption during World War II when many homes were requisitioned for use by military personnel . Today downtown features many restaurants*, bars*, theatres* *and malls
