The first gun purchase in Redding was made by Hosea Hoskins on October 3, 1871. A Winchester Model 1873 Rifle was purchased for $50 cash. At this time, there were no stores in Redding and most people bought their guns from local gunsmiths. In 1872, John Gault donated an Old Model .38 revolver to the town. On January 1, 1875, dynamite was discovered under construction on Main Street and it caused several businesses around town to close down until it could be detonated safely. This event is often referred to as “the Day of Doom” because it caused many residents to switch over to rifles instead of handguns. In 1902, George Fenton donated an American-made lever-action rifle known as the Fenton Rifle to Redding with instructions that it be used only for hunting purposes and not for combatting crime or defense against insurrectionists. The rifle has since been passed down through families in Redding and is now displayed at one of the city’s museums. In 1907, Edwin Smith gave away his shotgun collection when he moved into his home on Second Street in Redding with his wife Edith Nourse Smith (née Hume) and their three children: Edwin Jr., Anna Louise (later Anna Emmeline), and Johnnie Osmond (Johnnie Oswald)). His shotguns were given away so that everyone could have access to them during any emergency situation they might find themselves in without having too much trouble coming up with ammunition or finding someone who would let them shoot live rounds successfully! He also became involved with various community organizations such as Rotary Club and took part in many fundraising events throughout Orange County while living inRedding. He died suddenly just before Christmas 1914 at age 84 years old due To pneumonia which he had contracted while visiting family members east of San Francisco Bay Area
