From 1893 until 1912, when regular mail service ended between San Francisco and Los Angeles, passengers traveling between these two cities usedredding as their point of departure. During World War II (1941-1945), Redding became an important transportation hub as it served as a stop on the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). Thousands of civilians were evacuated from Japan during World War II through Operation Coronet which began on December 7th 1941 and ended on February 14th 1945. Many Japanese military personnel living in Redding were interned here until they could be sent back to Japan proper or repatriated through other means such as forced labor or death camps

Redding, California is a small town located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 12,587 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera-Riverside Metropolitan Statistical Area. Redding has been a farming community since 1879 and now manufactures textiles, plastics, and electronic equipment. The townsite was first patented in 1876 by Joaquin Miller. A post office called Redding was established in 1877, and remained in operation until 1912. The name comes from an American Indian word meaning "red earth." In 1909, John Leland started a munitions factory here to produce artillery shells for World War I. In 1923, he merged his company with Bethlehem Steel to form Leland-Bethlehem Corporation. Redding became an incorporated city on December 3 of that year. The population reached 20,000 by 1930; it had grown to 34,872 by 1940 when World War II began. During the war years there were many factories here such as Kaiser Aluminum Company and Ford Motors plants that produced products for military use including tanks and planes; these plants closed after the war but have been replaced by new ones such as Hewlett-Packard headquarters which are still in business today. After the end of World War II Redding experienced rapid growth due to its status as an agricultural center; this growth stopped around 1960 when per capita income surpassed $10,000 for the first time ever according to US Census data The largest employer during this time period was Alcoa which manufactured aluminum cans Redding experienced significant gentrification starting around 1980s with increasing development near downtown along State Street and other areas
