The National Guard in Redding, California, has a rich history dating back to the early days of the state. The first organized militia unit in what is now California was called the County War Rangers and was created on November 3, 1846. It consisted of twenty-four men and was stationed at Fort Tejon. After various battles with Native Americans throughout the area, Governor Pio Pico declared martial law on December 5th, 1846 and ordered the formation of a national guard battalion to protect settlers from any possible uprising by the natives. On January 1st, 1847 a detachment consisting of fifty-six men under Captain John Broughton left for San Francisco to meet with General Mariano Vallejo about forming an army against Mexican forces that had landed on their shores. On February 8th Captain Broughton returned to Redding with news that Santa Clara Valley had been successfully pacified and no Mexican troops were present anywhere within its boundaries. This made it safe for American settlers to start moving into this new land and soon there were over one hundred military personnel assigned to garrison various points in central Redding including Fort Tejon, Government House (now City Hall), Wagon Wheel Hill (now Old Town Square) and nearby residences such as Gilded Cage (now part of Sutter Home Museum). Although not directly related to arms or combat service within the militia unit itself, many soldiers who served during these years also became involved with local rifle clubs which met monthly at Government House or elsewhere in town for target shooting practice. These rifle clubs would often have members from all walks of life who would come together for socializing and sharing information about hunting cartridges and other agricultural products they were growing while away from home. It is interesting to note that even though rifles were not commonly used in actual warfare during these years, many soldiers found themselves proficient with them thanks to their experience Shooting Rifles Club outings. One particular event which stands out among all those involving the National Guard is perhaps its most famous member - General Antonio López de Santa Anna himself - who delivered a speech before its members on May 10th 1888 extolling their virtues as an institution designed solely for defense purposes rather than being used as a tool of political terror like so many other governmental agencies at that time. Inscribed onto National Guard helmet mugs are several phrases such as "Equal Opportunity - No Rank" which are still echoed today by Guardsmen across America when interacting with civilians or fellow servicemen off duty (even if they may only be wearing street clothes).
