NSPAWP is responsible for providing strategic command capabilities worldwide for U.S.–based fleets of warships and submarines Additionally, NSPAWP oversees eight subordinate commands that provide support for 710 Marine Corps battalions located throughout nine western states As part of this effort, NSPAWP also constructed two large amphibious assault landing ship docks – Lillie Boggs Dock in Newport Beach and John F Kennedy Dock at Long Beach – both of which are still used today by Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) vessels while they undergo repairs or maintenance ashore
