Redding is a town in southern California, United States. Its population was 25,795 at the 2010 census. The name "Redding" is derived from the Chinese word for red (hua) and the English word for cotton (ding). It was established by prospectors in 1848 as part of the Gold Rush. Redding had its start on April 12, 1848 when three men named George W. Smith, James Fenton and Hiram S. Chalfant started to travel up Red Mountain after finding gold nuggets there. On their first day at camp they discovered an extensive deposit of gold nuggets that would eventually amount to over $2 million dollars worth of ore! The town began to grow quickly due to this discovery and soon became known throughout the region for its fertile land, rich mines and beautiful views. In 1850, Major John Cranch purchased 9 acres of land near what is now downtown Redding from businessman Hiram Smead with the goal of developing it into a city. However, Cityhood never came about because not many people wanted to live in such a small town! In 1861 Redding became one of seven towns east of Los Angeles which were consolidated into one new city called orangesburg under Governor Pepsi Johnson. This consolidation led to increased traffic and pollution in Redding which caused many residents to move out or leave completely during the 1870s-80s when things got really bad with no end in sight. At some point between 1880-1900 only 6%of the population remained while 95%left dueprimarilytoeconomic reasons like transportation problems and noise issues created by large numbers of industry coming into town during that time period
Redding, California was founded by the Donner Party on December 26, 1846. The party was led by Captain John C. Donner and his men from the 7th Battalion of the Sacramento Volunteer Infantry Regiment. They were seeking a way to get to Oregon through the Sierras.
