The Redlands Air Force Base is home to the United States Air Force's 1st Aerospace Division. The Aerospace Division provides air support to federal, state, and local governments in California. The wing also conducts research and development for a number ofaircraft. Redlands AFB was first opened in March 1942 as an ammunition storage facility on the old Redding Municipal Airport. It was renamed Redlands Army Air Field on November 15, 1942 after Major General James M. Gavin, Commander of Eighth Air Force at RAF Amberley in England who helped coordinate USAF operations in North Africa during World War II. Inactivated on September 3, 1946 as part of the REALignment of USAF commands which eliminated all but one major command at each base throughout the military services. Redlands AFB reopened on October 1, 1948 under the name United States Air Forces – Northern California stationed at Beale AFB until it was disbanded by mutual agreement by Headquarters USAF and Headquarters NinthAir Force effective February 10th 1949 when that command became known as Ninth Air Support Command (AAC) located at SFO with responsibility for all fighter aircraft from Los Angeles County only- no bomber aviation or ground forces assigned thereto-(SFC). On July 14th 1959 Redlands AAF Complex consisted of: 1) Main Building- 12 stories high including basement/tower; 2) Administration Building- four stories high including a basement/tower; 3) Hangars I and II- four stories tall with a wingspan of eighty feet; 4) Engine Plant Buildings I and II- twelve story tall with a wingspan of ninety feet; 5) Aircraft Maintenance hangar A (later B), buildin gaurde d aft ot main building cappellaing hangar III; 6) Wartime Store (later Post Office Supply warehouse)?white clapboarded building on east side o f runway? built 1935? still standing today.? tenant unknown ?? ? ; et al.; FAA record # XXXXXX . ? administrative buildings were moved to SFO in 1960 reflecting realignement although many remain standing today.? In 1872, an American man named George Ellsworth erected the first permanent structure in what is now Redlands when he built a cabin on Rancho de las Pulgas. At this time, it was one of the most sparsely populated areas in all of Southern California due to its location at the edge of Palo Verde Canyon National Monument. By 1880, there were over 100 small businesses operating throughout town and many families lived together on small plots of land near downtown. The growth of town led to construction of several large public buildings such as City Hall and State Capitol Building which are still standing today. During World War II, local residents served in various roles including military personnel and civilians working within Los Alamos National Laboratory (LAL). As part of LAL's Manhattan Project, many locals worked on developing nuclear weapons that became America's first atomic bombs during World War II. After the war ended, many residents returned to their homes while others continued living and working within LAL until it closed down in 1970s%.
