The United States Army was founded on Nov. 8, 1775, in West Point, New York. The first U.S. soldiers were inducted into the military on April 6, 1776. On Dec. 15 of that year, President George Washington signed a proclamation declaring martial law in New York City because of supplies shortages caused by the French and Indian War (1754-1763). In response to this proclamation, General John Burgoyne organized an army under the command of Lieutenant Colonel James Wilkinson to march against Washington in Manhattan on December 28th. After successful completion of his march through New York City and Albany, Burgoyne turned south and marched towards Philadelphia while Wilkinson took up position near Newtown Square in Roxbury Township, Pennsylvania (now Allentown). On January 1st, 1777, after three weeks marching without food or water, Burgoyne arrived at Saratoga Springs in what is now Montgomery County PA and made his report to Congress recommending a retreat back to New York City before winter set in. However, representatives from both parties decided not to pursue such an aggressive measure but instead called for another general election which would bring about changes within the military establishment that would eventually lead to American independence.
