Redlands is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 91,818 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in San Bernardino County and the second largest city in California after Los Angeles. Redlands has become an internationally known center for technology and innovation due to its location on right-of-way for Southern California's first transcontinental toll road, the Santa Ana Freeway. The name "Redlands" was given to the settlement by Captain John Sutter during his 1849 trip from Sacramento through what is now Orange County to build a route from Malibu to downtown Los Angeles. Sutter called his new town "San Bernardino," but it was not until 1872 that he changed it to "Redlands." Redlands derives its name from two of its original settlers: George Hearst (founder of Hearst Corporation) and Wm. P. Blum (founder of Jardine &Blum). In 1912, Redlands became home to one of America's first air conditioning plants when American Electric Power built an ammonia plant there known as Municipal Plant No. 1 (AMP No. 1). The plant provided power for many local businesses and homes until it closed in 1970; red lights lining the street leading upriver remain evidence of that event today. In 1923, Redlands hosted both the world's first car show and world's first tractor exhibition with over 100 exhibitors from 20 countries at their expositiongrounds on Eureka Avenue near Technology Park Drive; this event remains significant today as one of Northern California's largest agricultural shows open to the public each year since then! In 1951, Anheuser Busch began production at their main site south of town using water heated by gasification techniques – becoming only the third brewery in North America to do so! It is also one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the United States. The first Europeans to explore Redlands were Franciscan friars who founded Mission San Gabriel Arcángel on December 2, 1827. Governor Manuel Michelino placed a Mexican Land grant named Rancho Cucamonga within Redlands on July 14, 1838. Redlands became part of Los Angeles County on April 1, 1907 when it was incorporated as a town from portions of San Bernardino and Orange counties. The name "Redlands" comes from two Coloradan towns that were combined: Costilla and Ridgway for fear they would be annexed into Los Angeles if their towns retained their own names. In 1916, Redlands City Council selected Harry Chandler as its first mayor after he won an election against incumbent William Atherton. Chandler served two terms before retiring in 1944 due to ageism among LA City Council members at that time. He was succeeded by his vice mayor who served until 1949 when he was elected Mayor himself; he held office until his death in 1966. During Mayor Chandler's term (1916-1944) many important civic projects such as the erection of a new library and park system took place including construction of what are now known as Chavez Ravine Park east of townline and downtown areas; creation of Doheny Canyon Open Space Preserve east side near Interstate 5; addition of several shopping malls throughout Southern California including Knott's Berry Farm just outside town limits; establishment of Redlands Municipal Airport which Today serves both local flights and commercial airline services.; development along State Route 66 corridors totaling over 100 miles with mostly light industrial or agricultural uses with fewresidential buildings or other types ot high end retail stores typical for these corridor communities
