Since the late 1800s, Coast Guard gift history has been intertwined with Redlands. The city is home to the United States Coast Guard Museum and also features a number of Coast Guard stations that were used for a variety of purposes from monitoring the ocean to providing humanitarian aid. In 1951, the first Coast Guard Station in Redlands was built on land donated by Mr. and Mrs. Royce Hargrave. It was here that local residents would come to pick up mail or provide assistance with fishing trips during high tide. Over time, other Coast Guard stations have been built in Redlands, including one in 1984 which served as the headquarters for the Southern California Sector until it was moved to Irvine in 2006. Today, there are six Coast Guard stations located within Redlands: three located within Marine Park and three situated along State Route 138 between San Marcos and Escondido. These stations provide essential services such as search and rescue, law enforcement, public health advisories, environmental clean-up operations, military support and more. According to recent reports from the United States Coast Guard Museum,[1] over 1 million people have volunteered their time at these locations since 1978! The Coast Guard has a rich history that dates back to the early 1800s. The first Coast Guard unit was formed in 1824, and it was only until 1840 that the Coast Guard had a permanent home on land. In 1851, the first ship-borne radar system was developed, and in 1916, the first coast guard station was established on Long Island. Throughout these years, the Coast Guard has been dedicated to providing public safety and protecting our coastline. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed legislation establishing the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). This action gave rise to new interests within the Coast Guard and led to new ideas for coastal security. In 1959, Congress passed an act authorizing United States Customs Service patrols along America’s coasts. Since then, UBSC has played an important role in keeping our coasts safe from smugglers and criminals. In 1984, Congress authorized United States Customs Service patrols along all of America's coasts combined – this is now known as Operation High Tide! Today, there are more than 3200 active duty members of the Coast Guard serving throughout America; this number is expected to grow by 50 percent over next 10 years! Redlands is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 112,357 at the 2010 census. It is the second-most populous city in San Bernardino County after Claremont. Redlands became an incorporated town in 1914 and an unincorporated community in 1922. As of the 2010 census, it has a population of 112,357. The first permanent settler in what would become Redlands was James Irvine who arrived on horseback from Lancaster, Pennsylvania on November 17, 1857. He and his family began to clear land that would now be part of present-day Redlands. One of Irvine's sons, John Irvine (1859–1937), developed orange groves along what is now First Street South and also founded the Irvine Company which built much of downtown Redlands including its first building – the Savings Bank Building – in 1891. William Cranch (1860–1920) started cattle ranching east of Main Street near Olive Avenue andowned most of present day Riverside Drive between Deer Park Road and University Avenue). In 1914 when Redlanders merged with Claremont to form one municipality, all local businesses were amalgamated into one organization known as "The Commerce Club". In 1922 when Redlanders again became an independent town they retained their own name but lost their right to vote within the municipality. Redlands experienced significant growth during World War II with many Japanese Americans being interned here during 1942 through 1945 as part of Operation "Banzai" troop movements throughout Southern California which disrupted normal daily life for many people living within strategic vicinity war zones such as Hollywood or Los Angeles . The relocation process was difficult due to strict military regulations governing deportations at that time; however nearly all internees received good food and shelter while awaiting release home or resettlement elsewhere in California . After the war ended many veterans returned to live full-time in Redlands while others took up new opportunities hereabouts including founding small businesses such as a grocery store operated by Lloyd Bentsen (1927–2006) then owner/operator of The Bentsen Store #1 & #2 located at 5555 Hope Road until 1994 when he sold it to Donny Moore (1948–2009) who renovated it into a high end hotel called Hope Valley Ranch Resort & Spa which opened its doors on July 1st 2009
Redlands was founded in 1887 by J. B. Smeaton, a businessman who had purchased the Rancho San Antonio de las Palmas from Mexican dictator Porfirio Diaz.
