Redlands was founded in 1872 by George and Martha Redding, who bought a piece of land east of the San Andreas Fault. The town grew quickly, and by 1888 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1898, Redlands became part of the United States after it was designated as a district in southern California. The town prospered during the early years of World War I due to its position as an important munitions plant. The war led to a decline in production at the plant, and however, redlands remained an important center for commerce until the late 20th century.
