Redlands, California is a city located in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 21,599 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The first people to live in Redlands were the Tongva and Chumash. They built villages near present-day Tomales and Redding. The Tongva left around 1800 when they were forced out of their ancestral lands by the Spanish government. Named after General Manuel Nieto Redding who fought in 1846 during the Mexican–American War, Redding was founded on November 1, 1871 by George Crippen and Wm Higginson as a cattle town on Rancho San Francisco de Arroyo Seco east of what is now downtown Los Angeles. The town began to grow rapidly due to its location on a feeder road for Yokuts Valley Railroad which transported goods from Kern County into LA and then downriver to San Diego and points south. The town was incorporated as a city on April 14, 1909 with an population of 20,000 residents (10% of the county). The city experienced rapid growth from its incorporation until World War II when it declined due to a lack of industry and development opportunities; however it has since seen renewed growth as a result of new businesses being opened in downtown Los Angeles and major expansions into adjacent cities such as Pasadena and Glendale.Today's skyline honors past successes while also embodying current trends by featuring high-rise buildings along with dense concentrations of low-income housing downtown within walking distance of all major retail districts including Union Station/LAX Airport/Fashion Mall/ Staples Center/the Universityof Southern California campus
