The Marines who deployed in Redlands, California in 1943 were part of the First Marine Division. The division was mobilized for World War II and fought in the Pacific Theater. After the war, the division was demobilized and returned to California. In 1949, it was re-raised as a reserve unit and continued to deploy to duty until 1982.
Redlands, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 139,569 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in San Bernardino County after Claremont and it is also one of the fastest-growing cities in Southern California. The first permanent settler in Redlands was John C. Fremont in 1824. The original name of Redlands was Rancho Seco de los Angeles y Tujunga (later changed to Redlands) due to Indian objections to white people living near them without paying taxes. In 1851, Gold prospectors discovered gold near present-day Blytheville and began building Fort Jones around this location as part of their efforts to find new sources of wealth and resources from elsewhere in Southern California. In 1862, following the American Civil War, General Robert Ewell decided to build a military camp on what is now downtown Redlands for Confederate forces during the war effort against Union forces under Ulysses S Grant. This event became known as Battle of Palo Alto which ended with Union victory over Confederate forces on October 12th 1862 The post office opened at this location on September 15th 1850 under the name "Red Bluff". On July 1st 1860, it was renamed "Redding" because there were few residents here other than farmers and ranch hands who could afford such a large change of names. On November 3rd 1870, when Don Pedro Menendez bought 160 acres (65 ha) adjacent to what is now downtown Redlands from Wm Hennepin Co., Inc., he named it Rancho Menendez y las Peñascoes (renamed Rancho Seco de los Angeles). Don Pedro’s heirs continued to hold title until 1924 when they sold all their holdings back to Hennepin County for $4 million In 1935 real estate developer Phil Sell filed an application for cityhood with the State of California based on his plans for developing “largest municipally run oil refinery west of Denver” along I-10 outside town limits Hearken Industries Company applied for incorporation as City Of Redlands on October 26th 1935 but never received approval from either state or federal officials despite spending millions advertising and soliciting bids throughout 1936 Mayor Jody Matson appealed unsuccessfullyto both chambersof Congress but no action resulted until 1942 when then Governor Earl Warren signed legislation creating City Hall and required that all applications be approved by local government officials before being forwarded onto state government bureaucrats For years no one knew why or how City Hall had been neglected; finally locating records revealed that a group led by former Supervisor Norma Chavez got involved early on and successfully lobbied local elected officials into providing funding necessary for operations starting in 1944 After initial struggles due #to storage space limitations within newly established City Hall complex various renovation/modernization projects funds went out unrestricted through Special Appropriations Acts enacted subsequent year culminating with formal dedication & actual opening & inauguration ceremonies held May 28th 1994 following more than 20 years process initiated by Mrs Norma Chavez
