Redlands, California is a city in the East Bay region of San Francisco County, California. The population was 25,626 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward metropolitan area. Redlands was first settled by Anglo Californians in 1853 and became an agricultural center with a large crop of grapes and other wine grapes. It also became known for its sandstone cliffs and redwood trees, which are now part of downtown Redlands. The first post office in Redlands was established on December 3, 1853, by Captain George Fenton with the name "Newnham". The town grew rapidly because of its location near lucrative water supplies from Mission Creek and Marblette Creek. In 1857, citizens voted to incorporate as a city under the name "Redlands", taking advantage of the fact that this was the only incorporated town in San Francisco County at that time. The City Council approved incorporation on February 5, 1858. On May 2–4,1858, about seventy men from various towns in Alameda County gathered at Redlands to celebrate when they discovered driftwood piled high along both banks of Mission Creek just upstream from where they would soon build their new city walls. On October 15th 1865 General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered his army into downtown Redlands after learning that United States forces had burned down some buildings belonging to Mexican rebels inside what is now First Baptist Church (now Texas Christian University). Santa Anna's order caused great tension among local residents who saw it as an act of aggression against their community; some even rioted outside Oficina del Gobierno (the government building), damaging property before being dispersed by military gunfire. Although no one was killed or injured during this riots - something which many people still attribute to Santa Anna's orders - popular anger over what had been perceived as an unjust event led to future efforts by local officials to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future
Redlands was founded as a town in 1887 by John C. Fremont and his wife, Nannie. The name is derived from the Spanish word "revi" meaning "a redoubt." The town grew rapidly due to its location near the San Andreas Fault and its access to irrigation water. In 1912, Redlands became an incorporated city.
