When Redondo Beach Mayor Tony Sgrozzi and other city officials heard about the Air Force's gift of a new bomber to the city, they were excited. The bomber was brought in for a dedication ceremony on October 1, 1992. At that ceremony, Mayor Sgrozzi presented the plane to then-Air Force Chief General James Short. Redondo Beach has been a major air force installation ever since World War II! The City of Redondo Beach purchased their first Boeing 707-200 from the Air Force in 1966 and has operated them ever since. Today, there are four active squadrons at Redondo Beach Airport - two RAF F4 Phantoms and two KC-135 Stratotankers. The redonda beach community has lifted many weights for our military service! For example, local businesses have donated thousands of dollars to various causes related to the military including Toys for Tots and American veterans groups like Disabled American Veterans (DADV). The community also supports Operation Enduring Freedom by donating goods such as food and toys to Army Base Point Loma across town. In addition, many people in the community have volunteered their time to work on various issues related to Defense including providing security at events like 5K races or helping with marketing campaigns for Marines stationed at Joint Base San Diego (JBSD) or Miramar Naval Air Station (MARS).

On Feb. 20, 1945, the Redondo Beach Naval Shipyard erected a large flagpole in memory of Coast Guard squadron members who lost their lives during World War II. The dedication ceremony was attended by Rear Adm. Harry F. Byrd and Maj. Gen. Leslie R. Groves, commanding general of the U.S Army Forces Pacific; Vice Adm., Chester Nimitz, Commanding General United States Fleet; Captains John Wadleigh ( flagship USS Enterprise) and Don Armstrong (USS San Diego) and Ensigns James Atherton (USS Preble), Irving Klawe (USS Grumman PC-6), Willis Kernan (USS Pinchot), Robert Halsey(USS New Mexico) and Wilfred Easley(USS Arkansas).

After the war, Australia continued to use this plane in its military until it was retired in 1970. In 1954, the USAF gifted a Lockheed L-4A Tristar airliner to Cuba. This plane became a key part of Fidel Castro’s rebel movement and played an important role in supporting his regime. After Castro came into power, he began using this plane for propaganda purposes and eventually destroyed it. Today, only a few fragments remain from this unique donation.
The Air Force gift history began in 1949 with the establishment of the Air Forces ham radio service. Today, the Air Force has more than 350 affiliated ham radio stations worldwide. Hundreds of airmen and civilians have donated their time and equipment to this important program.
Redondo Beach was founded on December 12, 1885 by Isadore and Nora Redondo. Nora Redondo's father, David Redondo, had been the first to come ashore at what is now redondo beach. The town was named for Isadore Redondo's initials, RBD. The city of Los Angeles annexed parts of Orange County in 1932 so that it could build a much larger city. This caused the closure of many small businesses in Redondo Beach because they were not able to compete with the new city boundaries. In 1933, the City Council decided that the town should be disbanded and its land divided among various citizens who would then have rights to it as their own individual property. Redondo Beach is part of Pasadena today and still contains many of its early settlers from 1885-1933 including David Redonda, his wife Nora, their son Isadore Jr., their daughter Nina, and their parents Maudie and Maurice Rocheleau.
Redondo Beach was founded on December 2, 1870 by Gen. James Irvine and his family. The town grew rapidly due to its location at the mouth of the redondo Channel and its access to shipping lanes. By 1881, Redondo Beach had a population of 4,000 people. In 1902, the city became incorporated as a result of state law. In 1916, Redondo Beach was selected as the site for the United States Marine Corps' first airfield in California. The airfield was later renamed NAS Northridge after then-Marine General William Halsey Jr.. In 1946, Redondo Beach became home to America's first naval shipyard when US Naval Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co., Incorporated built USS "Plymouth" (BB-59). The shipyard continued operations until 1963 when it was shut down due to budget cuts mandated by Congress. However, Coast Guard salvage operations at NAS Northridge continue today under the name Coast Guard Station Northridge. Redondo Beach has seen some significant development over the years including the construction of both high-rise apartments and condos; major league baseball; two large shopping malls - one in downtown and another near Century City; several casinos including one operated by master casinooperator Sheldon Adelson; numerous embassies and consulates around town; and an NASCAR race track which opened in 2002 adjacent to Interstate 5 Speedway
