Redondo Beach is a city located in Southern California on the Pacific Coast. The population of Redondo Beach was 117,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of Orange County. The first humans to live in Redondo Beach were the Tongva, who arrived in 120 BC and named it after their homeland in central Mexico. The Tongva people had a complex system of political governance and social organization that remains unchanged to this day. They traded with other Native American tribes and raided missions near Santa Ana for food and supplies during the 18th century. In 1795, Spanish missionaries founded San Diego Mission Santa Margarita (now Old Town) on Point Loma peninsula southeast of present-day Redondo Beach. The mission was abandoned by 1821 because of competition from Rancho Cucamonga (later Torrance). In 1846, Mexican troops under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna attacked Japanese forces at Tuna Pass in what became known as the Battle of Tuna Pass. The Americans won this battle, routing Mexican troops and driving them back into Mexico City. Commodore John D'Urbain granted United States citizenship to Californians living within 3 miles (5 km) of San Diego in 1850; this area included what is now Redondo Beach and Surfside Village north of Newcastle Avenue In 1875, following passage of the state Constitution which gave voting rights to all residents over 21 years old, redefined Surfrider's "heartland" as being within three miles (5 km) of downtown San Diego; this definition excluded much parts of today's city including Dana Point Peninsula south to where Interstate 5 crosses Townsend Street During World War II Naval Base Ventura County was established at Point Mugu Island west side off southern tip Of Dana point . The early history of Redondo Beach is unknown, but it likely dates back to the time when the area was a part of Mexico. American settlers arrived in the area in 1836, and by 1840, Redondo Beach had become an independent town. The first store in Redondo Beach opened its doors in 1845. Over time, businesses began to pop up all over the town, and by 1870, Redondo Beach had reached its peak as a commercial center. However, during the 1890s and 1900s, red tide incidents plagued the town, which led to its decline. In 1920, however, local businessmen recommended that city officials build a seawall around the town to prevent future red tide episodes from happening. The City Council then approved this plan and built the seawall. By 1930, Redondo Beach had recovered some of its lost ground as a commercial center; however, it still struggled with crime rates and limited resources. In 1972-1973,1975-1976 and 1978-1979 Hurricane Edith caused extensive damage to parts of southern California; consequently, many business owners fled eastward to safer environments such as New York City or Tampa Bay before restoration could begin. This forced many more people into businessarroda mode as they attempted to rebuild their businesses; however due to lack of personnel or equipment available at one point,[1] many businesses experienced slowdowns or failed altogether during these years.
